GAMEDAY: BASEBALL RESUMES SERIES WITH SPARTANS AFTER SUNDAY RAINOUT

5/1/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - Following a doubleheader split on Friday, the College of Staten Island Baseball Team resumes their series with Saint Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon as the two teams play the third of four games.  The Dolphins enter today's game 15-22 on the season and 7-11 in conference play.  The Spartans come into today's game 19-23 overall and 12-6 against the ECC.

The Dolphins and Spartans each took one game in Friday's series-opening doubleheader.  In game one, the Dolphins got a strong performance on the mound from Ryan Kehoe, but a costly error late allowed the Spartans to score the go-ahead run and take a 2-1 victory.  The Dolphins bounced back in game two behind another solid outing from John Esposito and a ten-run effort at the plate as they beat the Spartans 10-3.

Bryan Birkhead opened the series with hits in six of his nine at-bats for the Dolphins and Vincent Weigele added three more hits and two RBI.  Both also had multiple hits in each game, and Weigele was one of three Dolphins with multiple RBI in game two.  In addition to the strong starting pitching the Dolphins got from Kehoe and Esposito, Aidan Kielty gave CSI three innings of relief in which he did not allow an earned run.  With the win on Friday, Esposito also remains unbeaten this season against conference and is now second in the ECC in ERA.  CSI pitching also limited the Spartans to just nine hits across the two games on Friday as the Dolphins outhit STAC 8-4 and 12-5.
