GAMEDAY: DOLPHINS LOOK TO HANG ON TO ECC PLAYOFF SPOT HEADING INTO SERIES FINALE WITH SPARTANS

5/2/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - Following yesterday's 30-run, 35-hit marathon, the College of Staten Island Baseball Team wraps up their series with St. Thomas Aquinas College today at 3:30 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game 15-23 on the season and 7-12 in conference play.  The Spartans come into today's game 20-23 overall and 13-6 against conference opponents.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 6-1 lead in yesterday's game, but they could not hold on to that lead beyond the fifth inning.  After a five spot by the Spartans tied the game at 6-6, CSI took the lead back in the next inning.  With CSI now ahead 8-6, the Spartans scored nine in the seventh and 14 of the game's last 16 runs to pick up the win, 20-10.

Michael Kehoe and Thomas Marten each had four hits for the Dolphins yesterday and Marten drove in four runs as well.  His two-run homer, which put the Dolphins ahead 6-1 in the fourth, was his second of the season, and he comes in hitting .347 on the year.  The Dolphins now have their team batting average up to .273 as their offense has produced at a high level since the start of April.  However, their team ERA ballooned to 5.62 following yesterday's game, and the bullpen continues to have trouble protecting leads in the late innings.  While Steven Collica was likely in line to start today's game ahead of yesterday's 30-run affair, he did pitch in a brief relief outing during the 20-10 loss.  This doesn't leave the Dolphins with many options in terms of starting pitching unless they choose to pitch Collica on back-to-back days or to pitch one of their other starters on short rest.

Today's game has massive playoff implications for the Dolphins, as will every game during this final week of the season.  The Dolphins come in leading Mercy in the standings by just a single game in the loss column.  The Mavericks own the tiebreaker, so the Dolphins must lose one game fewer than the Mavericks the rest of the way.  CSI has five conference games remaining on their schedule, all at home, one against STAC and four against D'Youville.  The Mavericks have four games left in ECC play, all against Lincoln University.
