Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES MERCY UNIVERSITY TO SCORELESS DRAW

Dobbs Ferry, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team earned their first point in the conference standings today as they battled Mercy University to a scoreless draw.  The Dolphins are now 0-1-1 in the conference following today's result and are now 2-3-2 on the season.  The Mavericks remain unbeaten in conference play at 2-0-1 and are 4-1-3 on the year.  The Mavericks also remain unbeaten against the Dolphins in the all-time series and have extended their current unbeaten streak to seven games.

Neither team generated many shots early in the match, but the first three shots on goal in the first half all belonged to the Mavericks.  Faced with three shots on target in the first 30 minutes, Dolphins goalkeeper Amari Thompson recorded three first half saves to keep the game scoreless.  The Dolphins did register three shots in the first half, but none of those were on target.  Overall, the Mavericks attempted six shots in the first 45 minutes, all by different players, but the game reached halftime without a goal.

After Mercy forced Thompson to make his fourth save early in the second half, Steven Branco had an opportunity on consecutive shots just two minutes later.  Once again, neither was on target, and just over a minute later, Mercy countered with another shot on goal of their own.  CSI would put their first and only shot on goal in the 65th minute, but that attempt was stopped by Eirik Elvestad.  Thompson then made his seventh and final save just over 10 minutes later, and the game ultimately came to an end in a scoreless tie.

For Thompson, the clean sheet was his second of the season, and for Elvestad, it was his fourth.  The Mavericks attempted six shots in each half while the Dolphins totaled 7 shots in the match.  Daniel Angulo was issued his second yellow card for the Dolphins while Miguel Espinosa was issued his second.  For the Mavericks Carlos Fernandes also received a booking.

The Dolphins will play their first home conference match this weekend when they host CUNY rival Queens College at Dolphins Soccer Park this Saturday at 2:00 PM.
