Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

LATE EQUALIZER PUSHES DOLPHINS TO DRAW AGAINST SPARTANS, 2-2

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team earned a draw against St. Thomas Aquinas College earlier today after a late equalizer by Miguel Espinosa got the Dolphins even in the closing minutes.  After falling behind 1-0 early, Peterson Larose tied the score with his third goal of the season.  The Spartans then took a 2-1 lead in the second half that stood until the final six minutes.  This is when Espinosa tied the score off a cross from Billy Pavlou to earn the Dolphins a 2-2 draw.  The Dolphins are now 2-5-1 on the season and 1-2-1 against the ECC.  The Spartans end the day 5-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in conference play.

The Spartans came out of the gate strong and immediately seized the early lead behind a Yahir Hernandez goal in the opening minute.  The goal-scoring shot attempt was the second of six straight shots by the Spartans to open the game, and STAC was denied an even larger lead by two huge saves from CSI goalkeeper Justin Karaburan.  While the Spartans were in control early, the Dolphins began to take command around the 19th minute.  After six early shots by STAC, the Dolphins attempted six consecutive shots over fifteen minutes but failed to score.  Among those was a close call off the foot of Espinosa which was saved by Johan Morales and traveled just wide.  However, the Dolphins finally broke through in the final five minutes of the half as Larose sent the match into halftime tied with his third goal of the year.

Coming out of halftime, the Spartans quickly established a sizable advantage in time of possession and a decisive lead in the shot tally.  Despite this, Karaburan and the CSI defense kept the game even at 1-1 for over 25 minutes of STAC attacking pressure.  This changed in the 71st minute when Erik Wikan gave the Spartans the lead back just minutes after entering as a substitute.  Limited to just two shots and very little possession time in the half, the Dolphins still faced a one-goal deficit in the 84th minute when Espinosa delivered the equalizer.  Following a cross from Pavlou along the touch line, Espinosa was waiting in close to put a shot past Morales and tie the score.  The 2-2 score would go final minutes later, and both teams secured a point in the conference standings.

The Dolphins had eight players play 90 minutes in addition to Karaburan who finished with 12 saves.  Espinosa led the Dolphins in shots with four, and Pavlou, Larose, and Gerald Sufaj all registered multiple shots as well.  For the Spartans Kevon Evans attempted eight shots, three on target, and Morales finished with five saves.  For the Dolphins, Pavlou and Koray Arslan each picked up their first assist of the season.

The Dolphins will next play on Saturday when they continue conference play against CUNY rival Queens College.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
