SOFTBALL TAKES PAIR FROM CHESTNUT HILL IN 2024 HOME-OPENER

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team hosted their home opener earlier today and swept a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill College in their first outing at the CSI Softball Complex.  After leading 3-0 in game one, the Dolphins held on in the final inning to win 3-2.  In game 2, the Dolphins jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they walked off with a 10-2 win in five innings.  With the two victories, the Dolphins improve to 3-1 on the season.  The Griffins drop to 0-2 to start their season.

GAME 1
The Dolphins struck first in the opener of today's doubleheader as Aileen Balderas got CSI started with a one-out double.  After Balderas was allowed to advance to third on an error, Olivia Wanser chased her home with a sacrifice fly to put the Dolphins ahead 1-0.  That score would stand all the way until the fifth inning when the Dolphins doubled their lead.  Mariah Carcano singled to start the inning and stole second.  She was advanced on a ground ball and doubled home by Anissa Acosta with two outs in the inning.  Leading 2-0, the Dolphins added one more insurance run in the sixth when Balderas reached on a fielder's choice.

Alexandra Frenza was dominant through the first 6.1 innings allowing just five hits.  After recording the first out in the seventh quickly with her sixth strikeout, the Griffins responded with consecutive bunt singles.  Now with two on and one out, Mianna Lopez Del Haro tripled home two and put the tying run on third base.  Frenza would strike out the next batter, and after a lengthy battle, Skyler Cunningham would ground out to end the game.

GAME 2
The Dolphins seized the lead early in game two behind Anissa Acosta's second RBI double of the day.  Victoria Whalen then plated two runs with her first home run of the season to give the Dolphins a 3-0 lead.  Already ahead by three, CSI added four more runs in the second.  Carcano singled home the first, Balderas doubled home another, Wanser singled home the third, and Whalen singled home the fourth.  The Griffins would answer with two runs off Kennedie Ruth in the third, but the Dolphins would score once in each of the next three innings on their way to a 10-2 walk off win in the fifth.

Balderas went 5-8 on the day and Whalen went 5-7 to lead the Dolphins offensively.  Whalen drove in four runs in a 4-4 game two effort and Acosta, Wanser and Balderas each drove in a pair across the two games.  Frenza and Ruth each earned their first win of the season and the Dolphins were not forced to go to the bullpen in either of the two victories.

The Dolphins will not play again until they open their trip to Florida next Monday.  The team will play ten times in The Spring Games at two separate facilities in Winter Haven and Auburndale, Florida.
