DOLPHINS FALL TWO RUNS SHORT IN PAIR OF LOSSES TO GEORGIAN COURT

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team hosted their first home games since returning from Florida earlier today as they dropped a doubleheader to Georgian Court University, 3-1 and 6-4.  The Dolphins end the day 5-11 following the two losses.  The Lions improve to 6-8 on the season and take a 4-0 lead in the all-time series against the Dolphins.

GAME 1
Both teams had their chances throughout the first game of the day, but the biggest opportunity in the early innings belonged to the Dolphins in the first.  CSI would load the bases in the inning with one out behind two hits and a walk, but the Dolphins would fail to score.  Two innings later, the Dolphins had two in scoring position with just one out, but once again they failed to score.  The scoreless tie was finally broken in the top of the fourth when consecutive GCU hits put two in scoring position.  A run-scoring groundout and a sacrifice fly followed, giving the Lions all of the offense they would need.

A two-out RBI single extended the GCU lead to three two innings later, but the Dolphins put together one last rally in the sixth.  The first three Dolphins to bat would reach base in the inning, and an Aileen Balderas sacrifice fly brought home the first CSI run.  However, this is all the Dolphins would get in the inning as they stranded two in scoring position.  CSI would then bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but this was as close as they would get to a comeback in a 3-1 loss.

GAME 2
The Lions struck for three runs in the first inning against Kennedie Ruth in game two, but the CSI starter would bounce back and go the distance in a complete game effort.  However, her team remained behind by three runs until the fourth inning when the Dolphins scored for the first time.  With two outs, Avery Mochrie delivered an RBI-double into the right field corner to get the Dolphins on the board, but once again CSI had to settle for just one.

Scoring for the first time since the opening inning, the Lions added two more two-out runs in the fifth.  The score remained 5-1 GCU in the seventh when the Lions added another insurance run to go ahead by five.  The Dolphins came to bat in the seventh trailing 6-1 and the first two CSI batters were retired in order.  From there, a walk and a single put two on for Kassidy Latour.  The freshman delivered a three-run homer down the left field line to make it a two-run game, but CSI would never bring the tying run to the plate in a 6-4.

Anissa Acosta had a pair of hits in game one and Balderas had two hits in game two.  The home run by Latour was the first of her career, and the three-run shot gave the Dolphins 14 hits for the day.  The Lions had just 12, but their timely offense proved to be the difference as they took two games from the Dolphins.

The Dolphins will return to action next Wednesday when they face American International College on the road.
