DOLPHINS SPLIT THRILLING RAIN-SOAKED DOUBLEHEADER WITH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Springfield, MA – The College of Staten Island Softball Team returned to action on a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon earlier today on the road against American International College.  Following a thrilling doubleheader that saw CSI sweep AIC last season, the teams split two offensive slugfests, 9-10 and 12-11.  The Dolphins end the day 6-12 following the split while the Yellow Jackets remain at the .500 mark with a record of 5-5.

GAME 1
The Yellow Jackets took the early lead in the first inning when a two-out single brought home the game's first run.  The Dolphins leveled the score on an Aliveah Warner groundout in the second and went on to take the lead in the third following a bases-loaded walk.  Trailing 2-1, the Yellow Jackets struck for five in the third.  Following an out to start the inning, seven straight AIC batters reached base as part of the five-run rally.

After the CSI bullpen stopped the bleeding in the third, the CSI offense got back to work in the fourth.  Four of the first five Dolphins reached in the inning to bring home a run.  Consecutive two-out, 2-RBI hits by Olivia Wanser and Victoria Whalen then chased home four more to give the Dolphins the lead, 7-6.  CSI would extend their lead to three in the fifth with back-to-back RBI doubles b Bridget Motley and Anissa Acosta to make it 9-6.  The Yellow Jackets would cut that lead to one in the sixth before a seventh inning rally decided the game.

A one-out triple put the tying run on third base, but the tying run was cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice moments later.  A walk then moved the tying run back into scoring position, and a single would tie the score at nine.  With still two outs in the inning, the Yellow Jackets picked up the improbable walk-off win on a bloop single that just fell in front of the CSI outfield.  This completed the three-run comeback and earned AIC the 10-9 victory.

GAME 2
The Dolphins struck first in game two with a first inning run, but the Yellow Jackets answered back in a big way.  A three-run inside-the-park home run gave AIC the two-run lead in the home first, but once again the lead was short-lived.  In the next half-inning, Warner doubled home three and Wanser singled home Warner to make it 5-3.  The Yellow Jackets pulled to within a run in the next inning, but the Dolphins extended their lead to three behind a pair of RBI hits from Avery Mochrie and Amanda Stalker in the fifth.  Wanser singled home another run in the sixth to put CSI in front 8-4, but the Yellow Jackets pulled to within one behind a three-spot in the next half-inning.  The Dolphins responded with a three-run seventh to make it 12-7 as Warner and Wanser combined to drive in three more runs.

The final inning began with consecutive Yellow Jacket hits, a double and a single, to make it 12-8.  A strikeout followed before a single put two one with one out.  A double then plated both runners to make it 12-10, and the tying run came to the plate.  Once again, the Dolphins got a much-needed strikeout for the second out of the inning, but another base hit brought home a run soon after.  With AIC down to their final out, the Dolphins secured the win with a pop up on the infield to end another thrilling slugfest, 12-11.

Aileen Balderas had three hits in game one and Victoria Whalen drove in 3 of the 9 CSI runs in the loss.  Warner and Wanser combined to drive in 8 runs on 9 hits in game two with the latter going 5-5 at the plate.  Following 27 combined hits amid rainfall in game one, the two teams combined for 32 hits in game two.  The two sides also combined for 42 runs in what was easily the highest scoring two games of the season for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins will return to action at home on Friday as they will host D'Youville University in their conference opener at 1 PM.
