SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH QUEENS BEHIND GAME ONE SHUTOUT

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team returned to conference play this afternoon and earned a split of their doubleheader with Queens College at the CSI Softball Complex.  In game one, the Dolphins picked up a 2-0 win behind a complete game shutout from Kennedie Ruth.  In game two, the score entered the seventh tied at 3-3 before the Knights scored four times to secure the 7-3 victory.  The Dolphins end the day 10-14 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.  The Knights are now 8-9 on the season and are also 3-1 against the ECC.

GAME 1
Game one saw both teams strand a runner in scoring position early before the Dolphins finally broke through with a run in the third.  The first three Dolphins reached on two singles and a fielder's choice before Olivia Wanser singled home the game's first run.  However, this is all the Dolphins would get as they went on to strand the bases loaded.  After leaving three on base in the the third, the Dolphins would load the bases a second time in the fourth.  One run was forced home on a walk, but for the second consecutive inning the Dolphins would settle for just a run.  The Dolphins would load the bases yet again in the fifth inning, but this time they would fail to score.  The 2-0 CSI lead would stand until the seventh when back-to-back Knights reached base with one out.  A strikeout followed, but a CSI error prolonged the inning and loaded the bases for Alyssa Wilkinson.  Down to their final out, the Queens rally would end here as Ruth struck out Wilkinson to close out a 2-0 CSI win.

GAME 2
The Knights wasted no time taking the lead in game two as they scored two runs on four first-inning base-hits.  Trailing 2-0 before their first turn at bat, the Dolphins responded with three runs in the home half of the inning.  Consecutive hits started the CSI rally before Wanser doubled home two runs to tie the score.  Three batters later with two outs in the inning, Amanda Stalker doubled home Wanser to give CSI the lead, 3-2.  The CSI lead was short-lived as the Knights answered back with a two-out run in the second.  The Dolphins would have two in scoring position one inning later in the third, but a hard line out ended the CSI threat.  The Knights would then mount a threat of their own in the fourth, but they would strand runners on the corners and the game stayed tied.

The 3-3 score was not threatened again until the sixth when Queens mounted a rally with two outs.  After a CSI error extended the inning and loaded the bases, Kelsey Strayer induced a foul pop-up that was caught to end the inning.  The Dolphins would then strand two more on base in the sixth, and the Knights would finally break the 3-3 tie in the seventh.  Following a one-out double, Strayer gave way to Ruth who came on to pitch for the second consecutive game.  She quickly recorded the second out of the inning just moments are coming on in relief, but from there the inning unraveled for the Dolphins.  A bloop single gave Queens the lead, and four straight Knights would reach base as part of a two-out, four-run rally.  CSI would get one runner on in the seventh, but they would not get any closer than four and went on to lose, 7-3.

Wanser had multiple hits for the Dolphins in both games and drove in three more runs on the day.  Ruth picked up the win in game one and came within inches of stranding the go-ahead run in scoring position during the seventh inning of game two.  Her game one shutout was her fifth complete game and first shutout of the year as she improved to 6-4.  After the Knights were held to just two hits in game one, they scored seven runs on 15 hits in game two.  They have also held the Dolphins to three runs or fewer every time they have faced them since the start of the 2022 season, a ten-game stretch.

The Dolphins are currently scheduled to face Adelphi University on Tuesday and Molloy University on Wednesday.  However, inclement weather is likely to cause both of those games to be rescheduled.  Follow the CSI Softball schedule landing page for the latest updates.
