SOFTBALL SUFFERS TWO HEARTBREAKING DEFEATS IN DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST MERCY

Dobbs Ferry, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses today as they dropped two one-run results in their conference doubleheader against Mercy University.  In game one, the Dolphins erased a two-run deficit with a go-ahead home run by Aliveah Warner in the sixth before each team scored four times in their next turn at bat.  Trailing by one entering the home seventh, the Mavericks walked off for the win on a 2-RBI hit by Averi Miller.  In game two, the Mavericks saw a five-run lead get away only to come from two runs down to tie the score in the seventh.  Mercy then picked up a second walk off win on a solo home run by Samantha Franck.  The Dolphins end the day 10-16 on the season and 3-3 against the ECC.  The Mavericks are now 7-15 on the year and 3-5 in conference play.

GAME 1
The Mavericks opened the scoring in game one with a run in the first inning and went on to add one more in the third.  The Dolphins responded in the fourth with a solo home run by Warner to cut the Mercy lead to one, but the Mavericks added another run in the home half of the inning to go back ahead by two.  The 3-1 score stood until the sixth when Warner delivered a go-ahead three-run homer, her second of the game, to make it 4-3.

Now trailing for the first time, the Mavericks went ahead by three on a Franck grand slam in the home half of the sixth.  With the score now 7-4, Amanda Stalker cut the Mercy lead to one with a two-run homer in the seventh.  Bridget Motley and Natalya Knoth then followed with game-tying and go-ahead base hits to put the Dolphins in front 8-7.  Down to their final out with the bases empty in the seventh, Mercy drew a walk followed by a Shannon Sisco double.  With the winning run on second, Miller single home both runners to secure a 9-8 Mavericks victory.

GAME 2
The Dolphins struck first in game two as Wanser opened the scoring with a 2-RBI double in the first inning.  Warner then singled home the third CSI run to make it 3-0, but Mercy got one back in the home half of the inning to make it 3-1.  Trailing by two, a huge fourth inning saw the Mavericks score seven runs to go ahead 8-3.  Behind for the first time in the game, the Dolphins scored two in the fifth on RBI hits by Wanser and Anissa Acosta.  Knoth then singled home a run in the sixth to cut the Mercy lead to two leaving two on base for Aileen Balderas.

With the tying runs on base, Balderas delivered a go-ahead three-run homer to dead center field as the Dolphins went ahead 9-8.  However, much like game one, the CSI lead was short-lived as Franck tied the game with a solo home run in the next half-inning.  With the score even at 9-9, Wanser continued her massive offensive game with another 2-RBI hit to put CSI ahead 11-9.  Mercy would pull to within one in the seventh, but they eventually were down to their final out with Sisco at the plate.  Once again, the Mavericks came through with the clutch hit to tie the score, and after the Dolphins failed to score in the eighth, Franck delivered a walk-off solo home run, her second of the game and third of the day.

Wanser drove in five runs in game two and Warner homered twice for the Dolphins in game one.  Both Wanser and Balderas also had four hit apiece in game two, and Anissa Acosta had three hits in game one.  The two teams combined for 40 runs and 60 hits across the two games while hitting a combined seven home runs.

The Dolphins have a very busy week ahead which continues tomorrow at the CSI Softball Complex.  The Dolphins will be back at home for a conference doubleheader with St. Thomas Aquinas College.  First pitch is scheduled for noon tomorrow.
