Game Recap: Softball |

SOFTBALL DROPS TWO ONE-RUN HEARTBREAKERS ON DAY TWO AT THE SPRING GAMES

Auburndale, FL – The College of Staten Island Softball Team continued their five-day Florida trip this morning and suffered a pair of heartbreaking one-run defeats.  In game one, the Dolphins trailed 6-0 after the first inning and came back to tie Wayne State College at 6-6.  However, the Wildcats scored once more in the fifth, and the Dolphins stranded the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the final inning of a 7-6 loss.  In game two against Saint Cloud State University, the Dolphins trailed by as many as three before tying the score on a two-RBI single by Kassidy Latour with two outs in the seventh.  CSI would then take the lead in extra innings, but they ultimately went on to lose in the ninth on a walk-off wild pitch.  With the pair of losses, the Dolphins end the day 4-4.

GAME 1
The Dolphins fell behind 6-0 before their first turn at bat as Wayne State collected nine hits in the first inning.  The CSI offense remained dormant until the third when the Dolphins scored four times.  A leadoff single by Mariah Carcano was followed by a run-scoring Wildcats error and consecutive singles from Anissa Acosta and Olivia Wanser.  Now trailing 6-2, a groundout brought home one more CSI run before a bases loaded walk plated the fourth.  Now within two, the Dolphins got right back to work in the fourth and tied the score on a two-run homer by Wanser.  The Wildcats would take a 7-6 lead in the fifth, a lead which would stand the rest of the way.  A one-out walk followed by a Victoria Whalen single set the Dolphins up to potentially tie the score in the seventh, but the game ended on a Latour pop-up with two runners in scoring position.

GAME 2

The Dolphins scratched out a run on a fielder's choice to take their first lead of the day in the opening inning against SCSU, 1-0.  However, the Huskies chased CSI starter Anissa Acosta with two first-inning home runs and went in front 2-1.  Anissa Acosta, who recorded her 100th hit later in the game, was robbed of a go-ahead three-run homer on a incredible catch by Tenley Quenell in the second before Bridget Motley eventually evened the score at two with a gorundout in the third.  The Huskies capitalized on a Dolphins error to score three times in the fourth, but the Dolphins responded with two runs in the fifth to pull to within one.  The Huskies responded once again in the home half of the inning, this time with their fourth home-run of the game.

The two-run SCSU lead stood until the seventh when the Dolphins would load the bases with two out.  This time, Latour came up big with the game on the line as she singled on a line drive off of the shortstop's glove.  The Huskies stranded the winning run on third in the seventh, and the Dolphins scored the first run in extra innings in the eighth.  Despite a sacrifice bunt and three straight hits to begin the first extra frame, the Dolphins settled for just one run.  A wild pitch advanced the tying run to third in the home half of the eighth setting up a suicide squeeze to tie the game once again.  In the ninth, the Dolphins failed to score, and the Huskies would proceed to bunt the winning run to third in their half of the inning.  Following the bunt, a wild pitch brought the winning run home as the Dolphins suffered a tough 8-7 loss.

The Dolphins are back in Auburndale tomorrow with both of their games being pushed back due to inclement weather.  This will face the University of Minnesota Crookston at 2:15 PM and will face Southwest Minnesota State University at 4:30 PM.  Live stats will be available for both games at the links on our schedule page.
