MOLLOY TAKES TWO FROM DOLPHINS IN RETURN TO CONFERENCE PLAY

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team returned to conference play earlier today against Molloy University and dropped two games against the Lions at home.  In game one, the Dolphins fell behind 3-0 before coming back to tie the score at 3-3.  However, Molloy took the lead in the fifth and held on for the 4-3 victory.  In game two, the Dolphins erased an early one-run deficit in the first inning, but the Lions score six of the final seven runs in a 7-2 win.  The two losses drop the Dolphins to 11-23 on the season and 3-7 in conference play.  Molloy improves to 17-15 on the season and 5-1 against the ECC.

GAME 1
The Lions got off to a strong start at the plate scoring three runs on five hits in the first inning of game one.  Despite a tough first inning, CSI starter Kennedie Ruth limited the damage to three and was stellar in the circle the rest of the way.  It was in the third that the CSI offense gave her some run support scoring three times on four hits.  Mariah Carcano singled to start the inning, and after a lengthy battle at the plate, Aileen Balderas hit a no-doubt home run to left field.  Now within a run, an Olivia Wanser single with two outs set up a game-tying bloop hit by Aliveah Warner.  After the Warner single dropped in shallow right field, it was knocked deep into foul territory down the right field line allowing Wanser to score all the way from first.

The 3-3 score would stand until the fifth when a Molloy leadoff triple set up a go-ahead RBI single by Cheralyn Dusharme.  Now trailing by one, the Dolphins would strand two in the sixth before coming within inches of tying the score in the seventh.  Down to their final out with the tying run on base, Anissa Acosta hit a line drive that appeared to be headed for the right-center field gap.  Instead, the ball was snatched out of the air by Chirssie Huhn to end the game and secure a 4-3 Lions win.

GAME 2
The Lions took a first-inning lead for the second time in game two after a leadoff triple by Huhn led to an Alex Burns RBI double.  Trailing 1-0, the Dolphins answered with a run in the home first inning on an Olivia Wanser RBI single.  With two outs in the road second, Huhn gave Molloy the lead right back with a 2-RBI single to make it 3-1.  The Dolphins would draw closer in the third behind a leadoff walk, single, and sacrifice fly, but this would be the last time the Dolphins would score.  Molloy extended their lead back to a pair in the fourth, and the Lions went ahead by four with two more runs in the fifth.  The Lions would tack on an insurance run in the final inning to go ahead 7-2, and the Dolphins would be held scoreless in the seventh as they suffered a 7-2 defeat.

Wanser was 2-3 in game one and 3-4 with an RBI in game two as she continues to swing a red-hot bat.  Balderas was 1-4 in both games highlighted by her two-run homer in game one.  Carcano also hit safely in both games and finished the doubleheader 3-6.  In the circle, Ruth delivered yet another complete game effort in the game one loss allowing four earned runs on eleven hits.

The Dolphins will have two days off before returning to action on Saturday against D'Youville University.  Tomorrow's scheduled non-conference doubleheader against Dominican University has been canceled.  No make up date has been announced.
