SOFTBALL EARNS SPLIT WITH QUEENS BEHIND SIX-RUN SEVENTH INNING RALLY

Flushing, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team picked up a huge conference win earlier today as they came from down three runs entering the seventh to earn a split of their doubleheader against Queens College.  In game one, both starters threw seven shutout innings before the Knights picked up the walk-off victory in the eighth, 1-0.  In game two, the Dolphins fell behind by four in the first inning and trailed 4-1 entering the seventh.  In need of a conference win entering the season's final week, the Dolphins scored six in the final inning to defeat Queens, 7-4.  CSI ends the day with a record of 13-27 on the season and 5-9 in conference play.  Queens is now 12-20 on the year and 6-6 in conference play.  The two teams end the season series with a split of four games.

GAME 1
The first big opportunity in a game one pitchers duel belonged to Queens as the Knights loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning.  In a tough spot, CSI starter Kennedie Ruth picked up a bases-loaded strikeout to strand three.  Queens would threaten again in the very next inning, but once again Ruth escaped trouble.  This time, with two in scoring position, a ground ball would bring an end to the inning without a run coming across.  The Dolphins wouldn't mount any significant scoring threat of their own against Queens starter Caylea Campbell until the seventh inning when an error and base hit put two on base.  With runners on first and second, Campbell was able to induce two pop-ups to escape the jam and keep the game scoreless.  Following a 1-2-3 seventh in the circle for Ruth, the Dolphins would strand one on base in the road eighth.  In the home eighth, a leadoff double and bunt single set Queens up with runners on the corners and nobody out.  Jenny Murphy then delivered the game-winning hit to center as the Knights walked off with a 1-0 victory.

GAME 2
Game two saw the Dolphins fall behind by four in the first inning and forced CSI to go to the bullpen early.  Following an error and four hits, the Dolphins turned to Alexandra Frenza in a 2-0 game.  A single and a groundout would bring home two more before the inning came to a close, but Frenza was phenomenal the rest of the way.  In the next half-inning, a walk and single put two on for the Dolphins with one out, but CSI would strand both runners.  It wasn't until the fifth that the Dolphins would score their first run of the day as a Queens error opened the door for the CSI offense.  With the inning prolonged by the error, Anissa Acosta delivered a run-scoring single with two outs to make it 4-1.  After stranding two in the sixth, the Dolphins came to bat down to their final three outs still behind by three.  Five straight hits opened the inning as a Mariah Carcano double was followed by four straight CSI singles to tie the game.  Queens then turned to the bullpen, but a lengthy battle that resulted in an Alyssa Acosta walk gave CSI the lead.  Now ahead 5-4, two more ground balls brought home two more runs before Frenza returned to the circle and closed the door on a 7-4 CSI win.

Aileen Balderas had two hits for the Dolphins in game one, but the standout effort for the Dolphins in game one belonged to Ruth in the circle.  In seven innings-plus, she allowed just one the one run on seven hits.  In game two, Frenza was even better in the circle allowing no runs on five hits in the CSI win.  At the plate, Balderas, Anissa Acosta, and Amanda Stalker each had two hits and an RBI.

Still in possession of the fourth and final East Coast Conference playoff spot, the Dolphins will be back in action tomorrow as they face Molloy University in another conference doubleheader.  First pitch will be at 12:00 PM.
