SOFTBALL SET FOR EXCITING FINAL WEEK FOLLOWING SPLIT AGAINST MOLLOY

Rockville Centre, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team is set up for an exciting final week of the regular season following a split in their doubleheader against Molloy University earlier today.  In game one, the Dolphins came from two runs down with a three-spot in the fifth and went on to defeat the Lions, 5-2.  In game two, the Dolphins took a one-run lead into the seventh, but Molloy went on to tie the score and win in extra innings, 3-2.  CSI ends the day with a record of 14-28 overall and 6-10 in conference play.  Molloy is now 22-16 on the year and 10-2 in conference play.  With the win, the Dolphins assure themselves of a chance to qualify for the ECC playoffs on the last day of the season.  Depending on how their doubleheader with St. Thomas Aquinas College plays out on Friday, the Dolphins will need to win either one or both of their games against Mercy University on Saturday to qualify for the postseason.

GAME 1
The Lions took the early lead in game one on a first-inning sacrifice fly, and Molloy would go on to add one more in the third on an RBI single by Stevie Dabaddie.  After that, Kennedie Ruth shut the Lions down the rest of the way and gave the offense a chance to get CSI back in the game.  It wasn't until the fifth inning with two outs that the Dolphin bats came to life and brought home the first CSI runs.  With the bases empty and two away, Mariah Carcano reached on an infield single.  Aileen Balderas then singled to put two on for Anissa Acosta who doubled home both runners to tie the game.  Olivia Wanser then came to the plate and gave CSI the lead with another run-scoring hit to add to her team-leading RBI total.  Now staked to a one-run lead, Ruth did not allow another base runner the rest of the way, and after two insurance runs in the seventh, the Dolphins went on to win 3-2.

GAME 2
The Dolphins took the lead in the third inning of game two on RBI hits by Wanser and Amanda Stalker.  CSI then loaded the bases in the fourth, but the Dolphins would strand three leading 2-0.  Molloy would get a run back in the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Katie Hand to cut the CSI lead in half.  Molloy would also threaten in the fifth with two on and two outs forcing CSI to go to the bullpen.  Kelsey Strayer would come on in relief of starter Alexandra Frenza to record back-to-back strikeouts and strand two.  The Dolphins then went on to strand two runners of their own in the sixth, and the game's next run did not come in to score until the home seventh.

With one on and one out in the seventh, the Dolphins brought Ruth on in relief of Strayer.  The game one starter immediately walked a batter, but the Dolphins recorded the second out on a ground ball that moved two into scoring position.  With Molloy down to their last out, a wild pitch brought home the tying run, but the winning run was ultimately stranded at third.  After CSI failed to score in the eighth, a single and an error put the winning run in scoring position for the Lions.  With the game on the line, Ruth recorded the next two outs and induced a ground ball that should have ended the inning.  However, a throwing error allowed the winning run to score and Molloy took the 3-2 victory.

Kassidy Latour had three hits for the Dolphins in game one and Balderas had three hits in game two.  Ruth picked up the game one victory in the circle with a complete game effort allowing just four hits.  In her game two start, Frenza allowed one run on six hits in 4.1 innings.  Acosta and Wanser also drove in two runs each in the game one victory as the CSI offense produced 22 hits across the two games.

With four conference games left on their schedule, the Dolphins will be in action on Friday and Saturday of next weekend.  First, the Dolphins will face St. Thomas Aquinas College.  The following day, the Dolphins will face Mercy University with a playoff spot on the line regardless of Friday's result.
