SOFTBALL SWEPT BY STAC TO SET UP MUST-WIN DOUBLEHEADER ON SEASON'S FINAL DAY

Sparkill, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team will face a must-win situation on the final day of the regular season on Saturday following a pair of losses to St. Thomas Aquinas College in today's doubleheader.  In game one, the Dolphins grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but the Spartans went in front by as many as four on their way to a 5-3 victory.  Game two would only last six innings as the Spartans won via the run rule, 11-3.  CSI ends the day with a record of 14-30 overall and 6-12 in conference play.  The Spartans improve to 28-20 overall and 15-3 in conference play.  With CSI trailing Mercy by one game in the conference standings, the Dolphins must win both games in tomorrow's regular season finale to qualify for the postseason.

GAME 1
The Dolphins took the lead in the first on an RBI groundout, but from here the Spartans would go on to score five unanswered runs.  All of those came home in the third inning when STAC plated five on just three base hits.  The rally was helped along by three walks and a Dolphins error giving the Spartans all of the offense they would need.  The Dolphins would go on to bring the tying run to the plate in the fifth, but a bases loaded strikeout ended the CSI threat.  The Dolphins then mounted a second rally in the seventh which began with a one out single by Aileen Balderas.  With Balderas still on first and two out, back-to-back hits and a bases loaded walk plated the first CSI run of the inning.  An infield single then scored one more and put the go-ahead run on base for Natalya Knoth.  However, the CSI rally would end here as the game ended on a fly ball.

GAME 2
The Dolphins once again took the lead early in game two as Anissa Acosta put the Dolphins on the board with a first inning two-run homer.  Madison Edwards then drove in another later in the inning with an RBI groundout to make it 3-0, but from here the Spartans seized control.  STAC would take the lead for good in the second with the first six of eleven unanswered runs.  One more in the fifth and three in the sixth put STAC ahead by eight invoking the run rule and ending the doubleheader with a Spartans walk-off.

Amanda Stalker and Balderas each had three hits in game one and Olivia Wanser had a pair of hits in the 5-3 defeat.  In game two, four different Dolphins had a single hit with the big blow being Acosta's second home run of the season.

With two regular season games remaining tomorrow against Mercy, the Dolphins must win both to clinch their first Division II postseason berth in program history.  The team will celebrate Senior Day at the CSI Softball Complex beginning at noon ahead of their doubleheader with the Mavericks.  The team will recognize Kelsey Strayer, Victoria Whalen, and Elizabeth Moore ahead of their final home games as Dolphins.
