SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR TO SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS IN CONFERENCE PLAY

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team continued conference play at the CSI Softball Complex earlier today and dropped a pair of game to the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College, 7-3 and 9-2.  The two losses drop the Dolphins to 10-18 on the year and 3-5 against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans improve to 18-16 on the season and are now 7-1 against conference opponents.

GAME 1
Both starting pitchers got off to a strong start in game one as neither team scored in either of the first two innings.  In the third, it was the Spartans that finally got on the board first with three two-out runs on four hits.  The Spartans would go on to add two more runs in the fourth to go ahead 5-0, but the Dolphins would answer with a fourth-inning rally of their own.  With a runner in scoring position, Anissa Acosta singled home the first CSI run.  Olivia Wanser then came to the plate and delivered a two-run homer to straight away center field pulling the Dolphins to within a pair, 5-3.  However, this would be as close as CSI would get.  The Spartans scored two insurance runs in the seventh to go ahead by four, and though the Dolphins would mount a threat in their half of the inning, the tying run would never come to bat.

GAME 2
The Spartans offense got going a bit earlier in game two as they opened the game with a runner on third and nobody out in the first inning.  Despite the early threat, CSI starter Alexandra Frenza escaped the inning without allowing a run.  In the second, the Spartans scored for the first time with another two-out RBI hit.  STAC scored yet another run on a two-out hit in the third to go ahead 2-0, but the Dolphins would draw even in their half of the inning.  A leadoff walk followed by consecutive singles brought home the first Dolphins run before Amanda Stalker tied the game with a double into the left-center field gap.  With the score now even at 2-2, the Spartans scored the first two of seven unanswered runs in the fourth.  STAC would then score one in the fifth and four in the sixth on their way to a 9-2 victory.

No Dolphin had more than a single hit in game one, but Wanser added two more RBI to her team-leading total.  CSI pitching also limited the Spartans to just six hits in the first of the two games as Kennedie Ruth threw her sixth complete game of the season.  The Dolphins recorded six hits as a team for the second consecutive outing in game two, but this time the Spartans finished with 14 hits in a seven-run win.

The Dolphins will play for the third straight day tomorrow as they hit the road for a non-conference matchup with Bloomfield College.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
