SOFTBALL CLOSES WEEKEND WITH TWO CLOSE LOSSES TO BLOOMFIELD

Bloomfield, NJ – The College of Staten Island Softball Team wrapped up the weekend with a pair of close losses to Bloomfield College in non-conference play earlier today as the Dolphins fell to Bears 5-3 and 5-4.  The two losses drop the Dolphins to 10-20 on the year while the Bears improve to 12-15 with the two victories.

GAME 1
As was the case in game one against St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, both the Dolphins and their opponent did not score in the first two innings of Sunday's opener.  However, the Dolphins did fall behind in the third inning of game one for the second straight day as the Bears scored the game's first run in the third.  Bloomfield would then go on to score once more in both the fourth and fifth innings before the Dolphins began to mount a comeback in the sixth.  Anissa Acosta and Aliveah Warner each doubled home a run in the sixth, but the Bears responded with a big insurance run in the home half of the frame.  Now trailing 5-2, the Dolphins would scratch across a run in the seventh, but the tying run would never come to bat in a 5-3 loss.

GAME 2
The Dolphins took the early lead in game two on another RBI double from Acosta in the first inning.  However, that lead disappeared quickly as a three-run homer by Danielle Walters put the Bears ahead for good in the next half-inning.  Trailing 3-1, the Dolphins got one run back on an Aileen Balderas double in the second, but the Bears extended the lead back to two on a Jacelyn Moody solo shot in the third.  The Dolphins would pull back to within one in the fourth on an Olivia Wanser RBI single, but this would be the final time either team would score a run.  Pitching dominated the rest of the way as the two teams combined for just two hits over the final three innings.  The result was another Bears win by a final score of 4-3.

No Dolphin recorded more than a single hit in game one, and both Wanser and Natalya Knoth had a pair of hits in game two.  Alexandra Frenza pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Dolphins in the second game, but the Dolphins came up one run short despite outhitting the Bears 9-7.  CSI would leave nine on base in the second game, but the difference was the pair of Bloomfield home runs during the second and third innings.

The Dolphins will have a day off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday against Lincoln University.  That doubleheader will be the first of three straight for the Dolphins on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
