Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

PENALTY KICK PUSHES BLOOMFIELD PAST DOLPHINS IN CLOSING MINUTES, 1-0

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team suffered another tough loss at home earlier today as a late penalty kick pushed the Bloomfield College Bears past the Dolphins in a 1-0 defeat.  The match remained scoreless for over 83 minutes before a hand ball call in the penalty area set the Bears up for the game-winner on the PK.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 0-2 on the year and the win improves the Bears to 1-1.  The win is the first for Bloomfield against the Dolphins in nine meetings with the Dolphins maintaining a 7-1-1 lead in the all-time series.

The Dolphins threatened early with each of the game's first three shots belonging to them, two by Miguel Espinosa.  Consecutive shots off target by the Bears were then followed by two more shots for the Dolphins, both saved by Bears goalkeeper Sander Meintjes.  The best opportunity for either team came off the head of Koray Arslan who sent a header from point-blank range just wide of the post.  Meintjes was tested many times throughout the first half, as was Dolphins goalkeeper AJ Montana, but neither team found the back of the net through the first 45 minutes.  At halftime, the Dolphins held a 10-5 shot advantage, but the Bears held a 6-3 lead in shots on target.

Both teams surpassed their first half shot total in the second half, but once again it was the goalkeeping that stepped up to keep the game scoreless for 83 minutes.  Finally, it was a late hand ball call against the Dolphins that proved too much to overcome as the Bears were set up for a potential go-ahead penalty kick.  On the ensuing PK, Christian Jhon Cruz beat Montana to give his team the lead, but the Dolphins did not go down quietly.  CSI maintained heavy pressure on the attack throughout the seven minutes that remained, but they were left with the ball in the hands of their goalkeeper with 20 seconds remaining.  From there, Montana sent a long punt across midfield and onto the foot of Espinosa.  The senior forward then found Sean Fisherman in scoring position, and the freshman sent a potential game-tying goal just over the crossbar as time expired.

Espinosa led the match with six shots and the two goalkeepers combined for 15 saves.  Only Espinosa, Fisherman, and Jhon Cruz finished with multiple shots on goal, and the two teams combined for eleven corner kicks.  30 fouls were called and four yellow cards issued in a highly physical game as both teams sought their first win on the 2024 season.

The Dolphins will return home for their conference opener on Friday against Mercy University.  Kickoff, originally scheduled for 2:00 PM, has now been moved to 1:00 PM.
