Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

DOLPHINS HELD SCORELESS IN CONFERENCE OPENER LOSS TO MAVERICKS

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team opened conference play earlier today at home against Mercy University, but the Dolphins were held without a goal for the first time this year as they fell to the Mavericks, 5-0.  Mercy scored the game's first goal early and never looked back from there as Johannes Hanken Tjostheim found the back of the net four times.  The win keeps the Mavericks unbeaten at 2-0-1 and the Dolphins fall to 0-3 on the season.  Today's match, the first in conference play for both teams, moves the Mavericks to 1-0 against the ECC and the Dolphins to 0-1.

As he did on Wednesday, Miguel Espinosa got the Dolphins started on the attack with a pair of early shots.  However, the Mavericks struck first on a Mateo Bacigalupo goal, and they held the lead for good from there.  Less than ten minutes later, the Mavericks scored again when Hanken Tjostheim registered the first of his four goals.  Finally, Mercy wrapped up the first-half scoring with Hanken Tjostheim's second in the 30th minute.

Four of the first six shots in the second half belonged to the Dolphins, but once again CSI failed to capitalize on any of those chances.  It was thirteen minutes after the break that the Mavericks lead grew to four on the third goal of the game for Hanken Tjostheim.  The 4-0 lead would stand until the final five minutes when he scored yet again, his fourth of the game.  This extended the lead to five and gave the junior six goals in Mercy's last two contests.

Despite the five-goal defeat, the Dolphins were only outshot 16-11 in the match.  However, only one of the eleven CSI shot attempts were on goal.  The Mavericks put just five of their 16 shots on goal, and all of those found the back of the net.  Espinosa led the Dolphins in shots with four and Koray Arslan finished closely behind him with three.  Bryan Garcia played the full 90 minutes for the Dolphins in the loss and both Hanken Tjostheim and Benjamin Van Buren played the full match for the Mavericks.

The Dolphins will play their first road game on Monday when they visit Georgian Court University.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
