Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

ESPINOSA SCORES TWICE AS DOLPHINS FALL ONE GOAL SHORT IN SEASON-OPENER

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team came up just short in their season-opener today as they lost a one-goal result to Assumption University, 3-2.  The Dolphins trailed two separate times in the first half, but each time Miguel Espinosa would tie the score on a penalty kick goal.  The 2-2 score would stand until the final minutes when Cody Holbert would put the Greyhounds ahead for good with his second goal of the match, his third of the season.  The Dolphins begin their 2024 campaign 0-1 while the Greyhounds earn their second win over an ECC opponent in three days to improve to 2-0.

The first goal of the match came less than five minutes into the first half when a Dolphins foul in the box set the stage for a Brady Devos penalty kick goal.  However, the 1-0 Assumption lead would not last long as Espinosa drew a foul in the box just four minutes later.  He then converted on the first of his two penalty kicks to even the score at 1-1.  The score remained tied for just over 20 minutes until Holbert put the Greyhounds back in front with his second of the season.  Once again, the Greyhounds lead lasted for just a few short minutes as Espinosa was fouled in the box a second time, this time by the opposing goalkeeper Iver Sjavag.  Espinosa delivered another goal on the ensuing PK and sent the game to halftime tied at 2-2.

The second half saw the Greyhounds control possession for much of the remaining 45 minutes, but both teams had their share of quality chances during the latter stages of the game.  Most notably, Holbert sent an attempt off the crossbar making a bid for a go-ahead goal, and the Dolphins sent a cross just inches in front of the foot of their attacker Daniel Sokira late in the match.  Ultimately, it was Holbert who delivered the deciding goal with under seven minutes to play.  Following a Dolphins giveaway just outside of the penalty area, a series of three passes set up Holbert right in front of the CSI net.  This time the sophomore delivered what would go down as the game-winner to earn his team the 3-2 victory.

Five yellow cards were issued in what was a very physical game with the two teams combining for the three first half penalty kicks.  The goal-scorers for the Greyhounds, Devos and Holbert, combined for 9 shots.  Espinosa led the way for CSI in shots with 3.  Each goalkeeper, Sjavag for the Greyhounds, and AJ Montana for the Dolphins, recorded three saves.  However, the final shot tally favored the Greyhounds 17-6.

The Dolphins will return home for their next game on Wednesday afternoon against Bloomfield College.  That game will be a part of a Men's and Women's Soccer doubleheader and is scheduled for a 4:00 PM kickoff.
