DOLPHINS AND LIGHTNING TRADE SECOND-HALF GOALS IN 1-1 DRAW

WILMINGTON, DE - The College of Staten Island men's soccer team played their final non-conference match of the season on Thursday afternoon as they traveled to Wilmington for a matchup with Goldey-Beacom College (GBC).  After being held without a shot in the first half, Tai Torres put the Dolphins in front with his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Fourteen minutes later, a misplay on a long pass into the box led to a Goldey-Beacom game-tying goal scored on an empty CSI net.  The 1-1 score would stand the rest of the way as the two sides settled for a draw.

The Lightning applied great attacking pressure for much of first half and held a 9-0 advantage in shots entering the intermission.  The chances for Goldey-Beacom were highlighted by a long strike off the bar, and a pair of huge stops by CSI goalkeeper Carlos Romero Astacio

After their attack was dormant for the first 45 minutes, the Dolphins came out of the halftime break with a firm control over the pace of play.  In possession of the ball just outside the penalty area, a Badr Mesrar shot was blocked by the Lightning.  The Alonso Villegas shot attempt that followed was saved by GBC goalkeeper Jamel Yasin, but the rebound was put in by Torres, his first goal as a Dolphin.

Trailing by one with the ball in their own end of the pitch, a series of bad bounces culminated with a critical CSI error to tie the score.  First, a ball headed by the Dolphins traveled into the midfield where the Lightning were waiting.  From there, a long pass intended for Sam Ball drew Romero Astacio out of goal to the top of the box, but Ball arrived first and scored on the vacated CSI net.  This tied the score at 1-1, and neither team would score again on their way to a draw.

The College of Staten Island men's soccer team (1-5-4 / 0-3-1 ECC) will play the first of four straight conference matches to end their season on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they host Queens College at 2:30 PM.  The team will also celebrate Senior Day ahead of their match with the Knights.
