STATEN ISLAND, NY - The College of Staten Island men's and women's swimming and diving team entered their final meet until the new year at the Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, Friday and Saturday. Both squads took second place in the meet, where the lady Dolphins held the first place spot at the end of Day 1 with 112.00 points, but ended up being edged by the hosts Drew University for a second place finish.
DAY 1
The Dolphins' women set five new program records on Day 1: the 200 medley relay (1:52.38), 200 IM (2:16.18), 100 butterfly (58.08), 400 IM (4:49.52), and the 400 medley relay (4:04.57). Polly Struck led the way, setting new marks in both the 200 IM and 400 IM while also contributing to the record-breaking relay teams. Maria Janecka continued an impressive debut, earning first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.53) and setting a new record in the 100 fly. The women's team sits atop the leaderboard with 121 points among the four competing programs.
On the men's side, CSI posted strong relay performances, earning second place in the 200 free relay (1:27.42), the 400 medley relay (3:36.65), and the 200 medley relay (1:38.24). William Kwan battled to a second-place finish in the 400 IM (4:19.54), followed by Julian Lopez in third (4:22.16). Vlad Siniagovskii added a standout swim in the 50 free, clocking in at 21.47.
Both divers of Yubal Parra and Jacquline DeFranco took the victories in the 1M diving.
DAY 2
The women continued their record-breaking momentum, adding three more program records in the 200 fly, 800 free relay, and 200 free. In the third session of the meet, Aurelia Barbagallo set a new mark in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:18.22. By the end of the session, the relay team of Julia Janecka, Maja Tomaszewska, Michalina Bukowska, and Kaja Struck broke the 800 free relay record with a time of 8:17.14. Janecka, who led off the relay, also broke the 200 free record with a time of 1:55.68.
Janecka and Struck added more first-place finishes later in the day, with Janecka winning the 100 free (53.09) and Struck taking first in the 200 breast (2:30.13).
On the men's side, the team of James Curran, Brandon Kwan, Robert Yost, and Hassan Matar captured first place in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:42.45 to close out session three. In the final session of the day, Vladislav Sinigovskii earned the men's top finish of the meet, winning the 200 backstroke in 1:53.40.
The College of Staten Island swimming and diving team will return to action at the Tank on January 19th when they host Baruch College at 12:00 PM.
