SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AGAINST CHESTNUT HILL

South Orange Village, NJ – The College of Staten Island Softball Team opened their season today against Chestnut Hill College and earned a sweep of their doubleheader against the Griffins.  In game one, Kennedie Ruth pitched a complete game shutout as part of a 5-0 Dolphins victory.  In game two, the Dolphins walked off via the run rule in the sixth inning of a 10-2 win.  CSI begins the season 2-0 and CHC opens the year 0-2.

GAME 1
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the third inning of game one when they loaded the bases with one out.  A leadoff walk got things started before a Mariah Carcano double put two on with nobody out.  With one away, a walk loaded the bases for Amanda Stalker who walked to force in a run.  However, the CSI rally ended with a pair of ground balls to end the inning with the Dolphins leading, 1-0.  After the Dolphins stranded two more in the fourth, they scored for the second time in the fifth.  Aliveah Warner delivered a two-out RBI-single to double the CSI lead, but the Dolphins would leave two more on base as well.  It was in the sixth the CSI broke the game open with a five-hit inning.  RBI hits by Aileen Balderas, Stalker, and Bridget Motley did the damage and made it 5-0 Dolphins.  Ruth then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the win in a complete game, one-hit shutout.

Ruth allowed just the one hit and struck out eight in the CSI victory.  Motley, Warner and Carcano each collected two hits and Stalker drove in a pair of runs.  Seven different Dolphins combined to account for the ten CSI hits, and Chestnut Hill only had two base runners in the game.

GAME 2
The Griffins took their first lead of the day against Alexandra Frenza in the second inning of game two as they went ahead 1-0 early.  However, the Dolphins responded quickly as Olivia Wanser hit a three-run homer to center to put the Dolphins ahead for good.  Balderas doubled home two more in the same inning to make it 5-1, and the Dolphins would go right back to work two innings later.  A walk forced in CSI run in the fourth, and Balderas singled home another in the fifth.  Now trailing 7-1, the Griffins tacked on a run in the sixth, but the Dolphins did not allow the game to continue past that inning.  Wanser singled home another run to make it 8-2, and Alyssa Acosta delivered the final blow with a walk-off 2-RBI single as the Dolphins took the win, 10-2.

Balderas led the Dolphins with three hits in game two and Wanser led the team with 4 RBI.  Warner also added a multiple hit game, and the Griffins were limited to just three hits.

The Dolphins will have the rest of the week off before they head to Florida for The Spring Games this weekend.  The team begins their slate of ten games on Sunday against St. Anselm and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
