SOFTBALL EXTENDS UNBEATEN START TO FOUR GAMES ON DAY ONE IN FLORIDA

Clermont, FL – The College of Staten Island Softball Team extended their unbeaten start to 4-0 at The Spring Games earlier today as they scored a 4-3 win over the University of Mary and a 7-0 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  The Dolphins came from behind twice in game one to take a 4-2 lead, and CSI ultimately held on in the late innings to win, 4-3.  In game two, the Dolphins took the lead early and never looked back as they defeated the Mountain Cats, 7-0.

Game 1 vs University of Mary
Runs were scored in the first four half-innings during the game between the Dolphins and Marauders.  First, U Mary got on the board with a two-out RBI double in the road first to go ahead 1-0.  The Dolphins then answered back with a game-tying hit by Anissa Acosta in the home half of the inning.  U Mary went ahead by one a second time in the next inning as well, but the Dolphins took the lead for good in the bottom half.  With the bases loaded, Aileen Balderas chased home three with a bases-clearing double to make it 4-2.  Attempting to induce a play at the plate on a stolen base attempt, the Dolphins muffed a throw at second base allowing an unearned run to score in the sixth.  Now leading 4-3, Marena Grenier escaped trouble in each of the last to innings to secure the Dolphins win.

CSI starter Alexis Miramontes earned the win going 5.0 innings and allowing seven hits.  Balderas and Amanda Stalker each had two hits in the win, and were two of the seven Dolphins to record a hit.

Game 2 vs University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown
The Dolphins took the early lead in the first inning of game two on an RBI single by Acosta, and the pitching staff took care of the rest.  Getting the start, Kennedie Ruth did not allow a run in 5.0 innings, and the CSI starter stranded many Mountain Cats on base throughout her outing.  Still leading 1-0 in the third, the Dolphins scored twice. First, a passed ball brought home the second run.  One batter later, Olivia Wanser singled home the third CSI run to make it 3-0.  Acosta would drive in the fourth CSI run with a fifth-inning single, and CSI would turn the game over to Alexandra Frenza out of the bullpen in the sixth.  In relief, Frenza retired all six batters she faced, but the CSI bats weren't finished yet.  A three-run, three-hit seventh saw the CSI lead grow to 7-0 behind run-scoring knocks from Wanser and Taryn Judson.  This would ultimately be the final score as the Dolphins defeated Pittsburgh Johnstown four their second win of the day and fourth win of the season.

Ruth earned her second win with 5.0 innings of work during which she allowed five hits and struck out eight.  In relief, Frenza did not allow a base runner and struck out three.  Mariah Carcano and Acosta each had two hits in the win, and both Acosta and Wanser had 2 RBI.

The Dolphins are back in action tomorrow with games at 2:00 PM and 4:15 PM.  First, they face Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.  Next, they take on Franklin Pierce University in their second game of the day tomorrow afternoon.
