SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST HOLY FAMILY BEHIND LATE GAME ONE COMEBACK

Philadelphia, PA – The College of Staten Island Softball Team returned to action with a split of today's doubleheader against Holy Family University.  Trailing late in game one, the Dolphins surged ahead with 12 runs in the last two innings to win, 12-8.  In game two, the Tigers got the better of the Dolphins in a pitcher's duel by a final score of 2-0.  With the split, The Dolphins end the day 8-6 and Tigers finish the day 7-9.

Game 1
The Dolphins fell behind in the first inning, 1-0, and neither team would score again until the fourth inning.  Before then, CSI would have their best opportunity to get even in the third when they loaded the bases with one out.  However, the Tigers escaped the jam and stranded three Dolphins on base.  In the next inning, Holy Family would extend their lead to a pair.  One inning later, the Tigers would break the game open with three runs on three hits as they chased CSI starter Kennedie Ruth from the game.  Marena Grenier came on in relief to limit the damage to three, and the CSI bats emphatically came to life in the next half-inning.  Trailing by five, the Dolphins scored six times on just four hits in the sixth inning.  Four walks and a hit batter helped set up RBI hits by Bridget Motley, Aliveah Warner, and Mariah Carcano.  The big blow in the inning was a 3-RBI double by Madilyn Paul which came two batters in front of the go-ahead hit by Carcano.

Now trailing 6-5, the Tigers quickly took the lead back with three unearned runs in the sixth.  A CSI throwing error opened the door in the inning, and the Tigers capitalized with a pair of two-out RBI hits.  Now trailing by two, the Dolphins once again erupted for a huge inning in the seventh.  The inning began with a leadoff walk and a strikeout, but three straight CSI hits followed to bring the Dolphins within a run.  With just one out in the inning, Taryn Judson put CSI in front with a 2-RBI single.  The Dolphins then added some more insurance on a Tigers error and a pair of RBI hits by Aileen Balderas and Anissa Acosta.  Behind what ultimately became their second straight six-run inning, the Dolphins secured the win, 12-8.

Balderas, Warner, and Paul each has two hits in the game, and Paul went on to drive in four runs.  Acosta reached base three times as well behind a hit and two walks.  Grenier earned her third win of the season and did not allow an earned run in her 3.0 innings of work in relief.

Game 2
Both starting pitchers were strong in game two as neither team scored for the first five innings.  Along the way, the Tigers stranded two on base in the first, and the Dolphins stranded the bases loaded in the third.  Holy Family stranded two on base in the fifth as well, but the Tigers would finally break through with the game's first runs in the sixth.  With two outs in the inning, the Tigers rallied for a pair of RBI hits to go in front, 2-0.  The Dolphins would bring the tying run to the plate following a leadoff walk in the seventh, but that runner was quickly doubled off of first base on an infield pop-up.  This left the Dolphins down to their final out, and the Tigers held CSI scoreless in the frame to win, 2-0.

The Dolphins were held to just three hits in the game, but starter Alexandra Frenza kept them close until the final inning.  Frenza took the loss in a complete game effort allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out eight.  Molly Moore earned the shutout win for the Tigers allowing just three hits in 7.0 innings.

The Dolphins will be right back in action tomorrow with a second consecutive doubleheader.  Once again on the road, they will face Dominican University of New York at 2:00 PM.
