SOFTBALL TAKES GAME TWO FROM CHARGERS TO EARN SECOND STRAIGHT DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

Orangeburg, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team faced Dominican University for the second time this season earlier today and earned a doubleheader split against the Chargers.  In game one, a 2-0 Dolphins lead quickly turned into a 5-2 deficit following a big third inning for the Chargers.  Dominican went on to win the game, 6-2.  In game two, Alexis Miramontes and Alexandra Frenza combined to allow just two runs and the Dolphins defeated the Chargers, 5-2.  CSI ends the day 9-7 and Dominican ends the day 4-12.

Game 1
The Dolphins took the lead in the third inning of game one on a two-run homer by Aileen Balderas, her second of the season.  However, this would be the last time that the Dolphins would score, and the CSI lead was short-lived.  In the home half of the same inning, the Chargers scored five times on five hits.  With the scored tied at two and two outs in the inning, the Adriana Barnes put Dominican ahead for good with a three-run blast.  The Chargers would tack on a run in the fourth to go in front by four, and the Dolphins would strand two on base in both the sixth and seventh inning on their way to a 6-2 defeat.

The Dolphins finished the game with six hits while the Chargers finished with eight.  All six Dominican runs were charged to Brooklyn Mellor who got the start for the Dolphins.  Kennedie Ruth pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief out of the CSI bullpen, but the Dolphins were shut out for the final four innings in the loss.

Game 2
The Dolphins took the lead in the first inning of game two on an RBI single by Amanda Stalker, 1-0.  They would then have the chance for more in the second, but two Dolphins were stranded on base in the inning.  The Dolphins once again stranded two on base in the third, but the bats would finally come break through with a big inning in the fourth.  Consecutive hits by Madilyn Paul and Soleil Smith made it 2-0 to start the inning.  An error and a fielder's choice ground ball then produced another run before a pair of two-out hits by Stalker and Anissa Acosta brought home two more.  Now trailing 5-0, the Chargers threatened in the fourth before ultimately stranding two on base.  Dominican would score twice on three hits in the fifth, but Frenza would limit the damage out of the Dolphins bullpen.  The Chargers would eventually bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but once again Frenza escaped trouble as the Dolphins took the win, 5-2.

Acosta tallied her third three-hit game of the season in the win, and Paul, Stalker and Aliveah Warner all finished with two hits.  Stalker also drove in two runs, and Miramontes earned her second win of the season.  The senior pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits in the victory.

The Dolphins will have a week off before they return to action with their conference opener on March 21st against Mercy University.
