SOFTBALL DROPS TWO LOW-SCORING GAMES IN CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST MAVERICKS

Dobbs Ferry, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team opened conference play earlier today with a pair of losses in low-scoring games against the Mercy University University Mavericks.  In game one, the Mavericks took an early 3-0 lead and shut the Dolphins out the rest of the way.  In game two, the Mercy lead was 4-0, and the Dolphins were only able to get halfway back in a two-run loss.  CSI ends the day 9-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.  Mercy ends play 7-7 overall and 2-0 against the ECC.

Game 1
An error and a passed ball cost the Dolphins in the first inning as the game one's first run that came in to score was unearned.  Mercy would add two more unearned runs in the bottom of the second, both coming with two outs in the frame.  Once again an error prolonged the inning with two outs, and for a second time the Mavericks were able to capitalize.  Back-to-back RBI singles scored the two runs and gave Mercy all of the offense they would need.  CSI had their best opportunity of the game with the bases loaded in the fourth, but the Dolphins failed to score.  CSI would later strand two on base in the fifth and sixth, but the Dolphins would never get the tying run to the plate as they fell 5-2.

CSI starter Kennedie Ruth tossed a complete game and did not allow an earned run on six hits.  Both the Dolphins and Mavericks finished the game with six hits, and Amada Stalker was the lone Dolphin with multiple hits in the loss.  The top two hitters in the Mercy lineup, Mia Harris and Allison Murphy, did much of the damage combining to go 4-4 with two walks.

Game 2
After the Dolphins stranded two on base in the first inning of game two, Mercy wasted no time striking for two runs on three hits in the home first inning.  A one-out triple followed by an RBI single brought home the first Mavericks run before another base hit and a ground ball scored one more.  Mercy then loaded the bases with two outs in the third scoring their third run of the game on an infield single.  However, CSI starter Marena Grenier limited the damage to one and stranded three Mavericks on base.  The Dolphins would then threaten in the fourth putting two on with two out, but once again CSI failed to score.

An RBI double by Harris plated another Mercy run in the fourth before the Dolphins finally broke through in the fifth.  The inning began with a single, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt.  This set up an Aileen Balderas RBI single and an Anissa Acosta RBI double.  With the tying runs now in scoring position, back-to-back Dolphins grounded out to the circle to end the frame.  Only one runner would reach base for either side the rest of the way, and the Mavericks earned the doubleheader sweep with a 4-2 victory.

Mariah Carcano and Acosta each has two hits in the loss with the Dolphins tallying seven hits total in the game.  Grenier allowed four runs, all earned on eight hits in three innings before Alexis Miramontes pitched three no-hit innings out of the CSI bullpen.

The Dolphins will have nearly a week off before their next games on Tuesday when they take on the University of New Haven at 2:30 PM.
