SOFTBALL TAKES GAME TWO FROM NEW HAVEN TO EARN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

West Haven, CT – The College of Staten Island Softball Team hit the road for non-conference action earlier today as they earned a split of their doubleheader against the University of New Haven.  After falling 7-3 in game one, the Dolphins bounced back to win game two, 8-1.  CSI ends the day 10-10, and New Haven is now 7-13.

Game 1
The Dolphins took the lead in the first inning of game one as Amanda Stalker singled home Aileen Balderas to put the Dolphins ahead, 1-0.  The Chargers then took the lead with a huge third inning as they scored six times on six hits.  This prompted a CSI pitching change as Alexis Miramontes came on in relief of Alexandra Frenza.  Miramontes escaped the inning without any further damage, and the Dolphins quickly answered with two runs of their own.  CSI scored twice on four hits in the fourth, both runs coming on a two-out, 2-RBI single by Olivia Wanser.  However, CSI would strand two on base in the inning, and this would be the final time the Dolphins would score.

New Haven would add a run in the fifth, and the game would enter the seventh with the Chargers in front 7-3.  Following a leadoff single by Emma O'neill, a double play left the bases empty and two outs.  The Dolphins would then load the bases on three straight singles to bring the tying run to the plate, but a groundout ended the CSI comeback bid.

Stalker finished the game 3-4 with an RBI, and both Balderas and Aliveah Warner tallied two hits.  Miramontes allowed just one run in 3.1 innings of relief, and despite losing by four, the Dolphins outhit the Chargers 11-10.

Game 2
The Dolphins went in front in the first inning as a Chargers error brought home an unearned run.  CSI then added three more in the second on a trio of RBI singles by Paige Bell, Anissa Acosta, and Stalker.  CSI would later break the game open in the fourth behind a second four-hit inning.  Acosta, Stalker, Bridget Motley all drove in runs as the Dolphins increased their lead to 7-0.  This was more than enough run support for CSI starter Brooklyn Mellor who allowed just one run in seven innings of work.  New Haven's lone run would come in the home fourth, and the Dolphins would add one more in the seventh on a RBI single by Soleil Smith.  Behind 12 hits and a complete game four-hitter from Mellor, the Dolphins took game two by a final score of 8-1.

Acosta finished with three hits in game two, and along with Stalker, she drove in two runs.  Motley, Mariah Carcano, and Bell each had two hits in the win, and Mellor earned her first victory of the season in the circle.

Next time the Dolphins take the field, it will be for a conference doubleheader on Thursday at Molloy.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
