SOFTBALL PICKS UP FIFTH WIN IN SIX GAMES ON SECOND DAY IN FLORIDA

Clermont, FL – The College of Staten Island Softball Team won for the fifth time this season and lost for the first time in 2025 earlier today on their second day at The Spring Games.  First, they defeated Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, 4-0.  Next, the fell to Franklin Pierce University, 7-3.  The Dolphins are now 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in four outings at The Spring Games.

Game 1 vs Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
The Dolphins opened the game against the Fighting Scots with a first-inning rally that put them ahead for good.  CSI sent ten batters to the plate and scored four times on five hits before ultimately stranding the bases loaded.  Things got started with consecutive hits by Mariah Carcano and Aileen Balderas to make it 1-0.  Another hit by Olvia Wanser and an error loaded the base soon after.  This set the stage for a bases-clearing 3-RBI double by Bridget Motley to make it 4-0.  This is all the run support Marena Grenier would need as the CSI starter would go on to pitch a complete game shutout.  Along the way, the Dolphins would strand the bases loaded in the third and two more on base in the sixth.  However, the Fighting Scots did not mount any serious threat until the seventh then they came to within one batter of getting the tying run to the plate.  Faced with a full count, Grenier got the strikeout of the game's final batter to earn the win in a complete game effort.

The win for Grenier was her first of the season as she allowed just three hits in 7.0 innings.  The sophomore struck out six, the biggest of which came to end the game.  Six Dolphins recorded a single hit to account for the six CSI hits in the game.  The big blow was the 3-RBI hit by Motley and the other CSI RBI belonged to Balderas.

Game 2 vs Franklin Pierce University
The Ravens jumped on the Dolphins early in game two and put CSI in an early five-run hole before they ever came to bat.  A leadoff walk and an error opened the game before a triple plated two runs.  Another RBI hit made it 3-0 two batters later, and two more two-out runs put Franklin Pierce ahead by five.  The Ravens would then add another run in the second before CSI starter Kennedie Ruth gave way to Brooklyn Mellor in the third.  Mellor would get through that inning unscathed after inheriting a runner in scoring position, and the Dolphins would get one run back in the home half of the frame.  Anissa Acosta doubled in Balderas for the first CSI run, and this would be the last time either team would score until the sixth.

Still trailing 6-1 with two outs in the home sixth, three straight CSI hits brought home two runs to make it 6-3.  With the tying run at the plate, the Ravens turned to Georgia Clough in relief for a big strikeout to end the CSI threat.  Following a leadoff double, a two-out RBI single plated the first run against Mellor in the top of the seventh.  This put the Dolphins down by four, and CSI would not threaten in the final half-inning of a 7-3 defeat.

Acosta had two hits and an RBI in the loss, and five other Dolphins recorded a single hit in the game.  Ruth suffered her first loss of the season, but only three of the six runs she allowed were earned.  In relief, Mellor went 5.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits.

The Dolphins take the field early tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM against Southwest Minnesota State University.  They will face the Mustangs twice tomorrow ahead of a day off on Wednesday.
