SOFTBALL PICKS UP FIRST CONFERENCE WIN IN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT WITH QUEENS

Flushing, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team split their doubleheader on the road against Queens College earlier today as the Dolphins took game one by a final score of 8-0 and dropped game two 13-7.  The Dolphins took the early game via the run rule winning 8-0 in just five innings.  CSI then took the lead by as many as four runs in game two, but Queens scored 12 of the last 14 runs to win, 13-7.  The Dolphins end the day 11-13 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.  The Knights are now 6-12 on the year and 2-2 against the ECC.

Game 1
The Dolphins took the lead for good in the second inning of game one behind a lengthy seven-run rally.  Soleil Smith plated the game's first run with a groundout before Paige Bell singled home a pair moments later.  Following back-to-back walks, Aileen Balderas singled home two more.  Finally, Olivia Wanser drove in another two runs with a 2-RBI single to put the Dolphins in front, 7-0.  The Dolphins would tack on one run in the third on an RBI single by Anissa Acosta, and CSI would hold that lead through five.   Starter Alexandra Frenza allowed just four hits in her second victory of the year, and the Dolphins defeated the Knights via the run rule in five innings, 8-0.

Balderas and Wanser each had two hits and 2 RBI to lead the Dolphins, and Bell also drove in two during the second-inning CSI rally.  The Dolphins needed just seven hits to score their eight runs, but CSI also benefited from five walks and a hit batter.

Game 2
The Dolphins also took a two-run lead in the first inning of game two on a 2-RBI single by Aliveah Warner.  The Knights got one back in the home half of the inning, but CSI starter Kennedie Ruth stranded two Knights on base.  The Dolphins extended their lead to four in the third as Wanser put three more on the board for the Dolphins with a three-run homer.  Trailing 5-1, the Knights responded with their biggest inning of the day.  Queens scored six times on seven hits in the third inning to go in front, 7-5.  The Dolphins then got even with two runs in the fourth behind RBI doubles from Balderas and Wanser.  However, this would be the final time the Dolphins would score.  Queens scored six unanswered runs the rest of the way, four in the fifth and two in the sixth, as they went on to win, 13-7.

Balderas added three more hits in game two and was one of five Dolphins with multiple hits in the game.  She was joined by Mariah Carcano, Wanser, Warner, and Bridget Motley with at least two hits in the loss.  Wanser led the Dolphins with 4 RBI, and as a team, CSI collected 14 hits.

The Dolphins will head to Lincoln, PA on Wednesday for a matchup with Lincoln University.  After that, the Dolphins will spend nearly the entire month of April at the CSI Softball Complex.  Following Wednesday's doubleheader against the Lions, the Dolphins will have just four road games remaining.
