SOFTBALL ENDS 10-GAME TRIP TO THE SPRING GAMES WITH FIVE WINS

Clermont, FL – The College of Staten Island Softball Team ended their 10-game trip to The Spring Games earlier today with a split of two games against Dominican University and St. Cloud State University.  In game one, the Dolphins got another strong pitching performance from Marena Grenier as they defeated the Chargers, 6-1.  In game two, the Dolphins failed to score as they were knocked off by St. Cloud State University, 6-0.

Game 1 vs Dominican University
After Aileen Balderas led off the game with a double, the Dolphins drew three walks to bring home the game's first run.  However, the Dolphins failed to score again in the frame and settled for just one run.  A walk and a double brought home the tying run for the Chargers in the bottom half of the inning, but this would be the only run allowed by Grenier.  Anissa Acosta doubled home a run in the second, but Balderas was cut down at home on the play trying to score the third CSI run.  Two innings later in the fourth, the Dolphins added two more runs on RBI hits by Acosta and Motley.  Finally, the Dolphins rallied for two more in the seventh on another RBI hit by Acosta and one more by Olivia Wanser.  The Chargers would put two on base in the bottom half of the inning, but Grenier did not allow a run as the Dolphins took the win, 6-1.

Acosta was 3-4 with 3 RBI and Mariah Carcano added three more hits and three runs scored.  Both Wanser and Motley each had two hits, and Grenier allowed one run on seven hits in a complete game victory.

Game 2 vs St. Cloud State University
Both starting pitchers set down the opposition without needing many pitches early in the game, and both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings.  The Huskies would break through with a run for the first time in the fourth after a Dolphins error prolonged the inning.  A leadoff double put a runner in scoring position, and a dropped fly ball put runners on the corners with one out.  After a ground ball resulted in the second out, a two-out, two-RBI double put SCSU ahead 2-0.  The Huskies struck for three more runs in the fifth and one in the seventh, needing just six hits to score six times.  The Dolphins were limited to five hits, and CSI was unable to plate a run in a 6-0 defeat.

Six Dolphins finished the game with a single hit and CSI used three pitchers in their final game in Florida.  Brooklyn Mellor got the start and was charged with five runs, one earned, in 4.1 innings.  Alexandra Frenza and Alexis Miramontes combined for 2.2 innings allowing one run on one hit.
