SOFTBALL FALLS TO STAC TO OPEN LATE-SEASON STRETCH OF CONFERENCE PLAY

Sparkill, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team opened a late-season stretch of conference games with a pair of losses on the road against St. Thomas Aquinas earlier today.  In game one, the Spartans defeated the Dolphins 5-3, and in game two the Dolphins were shut out in a 2-0 loss.  CSI ends the day with a 13-15 overall record, and the Dolphins are now 1-7 in conference play.  The Spartans are now 20-15 on the year and 8-2 against the ECC.

Game 1
Neither team recorded a baserunner in the first before the Dolphins generated the first quality scoring chance in the second.  An Amanda Stalker double got things started, and the inning was prolonged by a Spartans error.  However, the Dolphins stranded two on base in the inning, and the Spartans would do the same in the bottom half of the inning.  It was in the third that the Spartans would open the scoring with a three-hit inning to go ahead 2-0.  The Dolphins then cut the lead to one in the fifth on Madilyn Paul's first career home run.  STAC responded quickly in the bottom half with two runs on two hits to go ahead by three.

Trailing 4-1, the Dolphins scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit back to a single run.  Three CSI hits and a groundout plated a pair highlighted by an RBI single from Aliveah Warner.  Now leading 4-3, STAC tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to go in front by two.  The Dolphins would get a two-out baserunner in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but their comeback bid would not continue any further in a 5-3 defeat.

Stalker and Warner each had two hits, and the Dolphins finished the game with six hits.  CSI pitching held the Spartans to seven hits and starter Kennedie Ruth allowed five runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.  Marena Grenier came on to close out the Spartans in the sixth and allowed one hit in her inning of work.

Game 2
The Spartans scored all of game three's runs during a first-inning rally that plated three.  The Dolphins would get their first scoring chance in the fourth after two batters reached with two outs in the inning.  With two on, the inning ended with a ground ball, but CSI would put together another threat in the fifth.  Once again two Dolphins reached with two out, this time on back-to-back singles.  However, the scoring opportunity was halted with a strikeout, and this would be the last time CSI put a runner in scoring position.  One batter reached for the Dolphins in the sixth and seventh inning, but the Dolphins would not bring the tying run to the plate again.

The Dolphins were outhit 7-6 for the second consecutive game, and six different CSI batters recorded a single hit in the loss.  Brooklyn Mellor got the start for the Dolphins in game two and allowed three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.  Alexandra Frenza also added an inning of scoreless relief.

The Dolphins will continue conference play at home this weekend.  On Saturday, they are scheduled to face Mercy University, and on Sunday they will meet STAC for the second time in four days.
