DOLPHINS SPLIT SECOND STRAIGHT DOUBLEHEADER MATCHUP WITH SPARTANS

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team faced St. Thomas Aquinas College for the second time in four days this afternoon as they split their conference doubleheader with the Spartans.  In game one, the Dolphins erased a first-inning deficit and took the win 5-3.  In game two, the Spartans erased an early deficit to defeat the Dolphins, 7-1.  CSI's win in game one was their first against STAC since 2021, and the Dolphins end the day 14-16 overall and 2-8 in conference play.  The Spartans end the day 21-16 on the year and 9-3 against the ECC.

GAME 1
The Spartans scored an unearned run in the top of the first to go in front 1-0, but the Dolphins answered right back with two in the bottom half.  After loading the bases with nobody out, two straight Dolphins were retired to bring Aliveah Warner to the plate.  Warner delivered a 2-RBI double down the right field line to put the Dolphins ahead 2-1, and this would be the last time that either team would score until the fourth.  After two Dolphins reached, Anissa Acosta came to bat with one out and two on.  The senior came through with a base hit, and the third CSI run would come home following an error on the play.  Two batters later, Amanda Stalker plated another with a sacrifice fly, and the Dolphins took a 4-1 lead into the fifth.

Now trailing by two, STAC quickly got two runs right back in the fifth to make it 4-3.  Still leading by one in the sixth, the Dolphins would tack on an insurance run in the inning.  A leadoff walk followed by a wild pitch put Alyssa Acosta on second base with nobody out.  Anissa Acosta then doubled her home to make it 5-3, but Acosta was stranded on second to end the frame.  CSI starter Kennedie Ruth, who entered the seventh over 130 pitches, then set the Spartans down in order to secure the complete game victory, 5-3.

Anissa Acosta finished with two hits and two RBI, and Warner also drove in two runs.  In the complete game, Ruth allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits.  She finished the game with 143 pitches earning her fifth win of the season.

GAME 2
The Dolphins took the early lead in game two on an RBI double by Aileen Balderas.  However, CSI was denied further damage in the inning when Stalker was thrown out at home trying to score on the same play.  After the Dolphins collected three hits in the first, the Spartans reached three hits for the game with two in the second.  Despite putting runners on the corners, STAC stranded a pair in the inning and did not score.  It was in the third that the Spartans would take the lead for good as three runs came home behind two hits and a critical Dolphins error.  Now trailing 3-1, the Dolphins left two on base in the third and stranded two more in the fourth.  STAC added another run on a solo home run in the fifth, and the Spartans broke the game open with three more in the sixth.  The Dolphins would never threaten the six-run STAC lead, and the Spartans would earn the doubleheader split with a 7-1 victory.

Mariah Carcano led the Dolphins in game two with two hits, and Balderas drove in the lone Dolphins run.  Alexandra Frenza took the loss allowing six runs, four earned, in 5.1 innings.  Brooklyn Mellor pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits.

The Dolphins will be on the road for another conference doubleheader against D'Youville on Tuesday.  The team then returns home for four more conference games next weekend.
