SOFTBALL SCORES PAIR OF KEY CONFERENCE WINS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF QUEENS

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team picked up two key conference wins this afternoon against CUNY rival Queens College as they swept a doubleheader from the Knights at the CSI Softball Complex.  In game one, the Dolphins took and early 2-0 lead and won 4-2 behind a pair of late insurance runs.  In game two, a 3-0 CSI lead was cut to one in the seventh, but the Dolphins held on for the 3-2 victory.  CSI ends the day 17-17 on the season and 5-9 in conference play.  The Knights are now 7-25 overall and 3-13 against the ECC.

GAME 1
The Dolphins struck early for the second straight game as they scored twice in the first inning of game one.  A pair of one-out walks put two on base, and Olivia Wanser drove in the first two runs of the game with a two-out, 2-RBI single.  The Dolphins would load then bases with two outs in the second as well, but the rally ended there without a run coming home.  Queens would mount their first major threat in the fifth as consecutive hits opened the inning.  A strikeout was then followed by an infield fly for the first two outs, and Kennedie Ruth escaped trouble with her second strikeout of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Dolphins plated another two runs on three base hits.  Amanda Stalker doubled home the first before Aileen Balderas doubled home another moments later.  Now behind 4-0, the Knights scored a pair in the fifth.  Consecutive singles got things started, and a sacrifice fly made it 4-1.  A CSI error then allowed one more run to score before Ruth ended the inning with another strikeout.  Ruth would then return to the circle for the seventh, and she set the Knights down in order to give the Dolphins the 4-2 victory.

Mariah Carcano led the Dolphins with two hits and two runs scored in the win, and Wanser's 2 RBI also led the team.  The Dolphins finished the game with six hits, and Ruth held the Knights to just four in a complete game victory.

GAME 2
Neither team was able to push across a run until the fifth inning of game two, but both sides did generate scoring chances along the way.  Two Knights reached in the second, but Alexandra Frenza was able to strand both on base.  In the third, two Dolphins were stranded on base, and in the fourth Queens stranded the bases loaded.  It was in the bottom of the fifth that the Dolphins would finally break through with two runs on three hits.  Alyssa Acosta got the rally started with a single, and Anissa Acosta put two on with a base hit soon after.  The duo was then bunted over to second and third by Carcano setting up a two-out, 2-RBI double by Stalker.  The Dolphins would take that 2-0 lead into the home sixth, and Aliveah Warner would double home another run to make it 3-0.  Frenza would return to the circle in the seventh, but her shutout bid would end on a two-out, two-run homer by Caylea Campbell.  Frenza would then bounce back to record the final out of the game as the Dolphins held on to win, 3-2.

Stalker and Wanser each finished the game with two hits and the Dolphins finished the game with eight.  Frenza limited the Knights to just four hits, and much of the Queens traffic on the bases came as a result of her five walks.

The Dolphins will have a chance to close the gap between them and the final ECC playoff spot a bit further tomorrow as they face Molloy University at home.  The Dolphins will also be celebrating Senior Day as they recognize 2024 graduate Sabrina Kaffl and current seniors Alexis Miramontes, Mariah Carcano, and Anissa Acosta.
