SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH MOLLOY SETTING UP FINAL WEEK THAT WILL DETERMINE PLAYOFF FATE

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team celebrated Senior Day at the CSI Softball Complex earlier today and earned a split of their doubleheader against Molloy University.  In game one, the Dolphins erased a three-run deficit to win, 4-3.  In game two, the Dolphins fell behind early and were limited to just two hits in a 7-1 defeat.  The Dolphins end the day 18-18 on the season and 6-10 in conference play.  Molloy is now 17-23 overall nad 10-4 against the ECC.

GAME 1
Molloy took the lead in the first inning of game one after a two-out double brought home the game's first.  One batter later, a solo home run by Cheralyn Dusharme gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.  After a scoreless bottom of the first, Molloy loaded the bases in the second forcing a CSI pitching change.  Marena Grenier walked the first batter that she faced to force in a run, but this would be the only batter to score with the CSI reliever in the circle.  The Dolphins would get a run back in the second after Alyssa Acosta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but CSI would leave three on base in the inning.  This would be the last time that either team would score until the sixth when Aileen Balderas doubled home two runs to tie the game.  CSI would eventually load the bases later in the inning, and after a lengthy battle, Bridget Motley would drive in the go-ahead run with a groundout.  Grenier worked around an error in the sixth, and she stranded the tying run on base in the seventh inning of a 4-3 Dolphins win.

Amanda Stalker led the Dolphins with two hits and Balderas drove in a team-leading two runs.  The Dolphins outhit the Lions 7-4, and Grenier allowed just two hits in 5.1 innings of relief to earn the victory.

GAME 2
Molloy also went ahead in the first inning of game two with three runs against CSI starter Kennedie Ruth.  Molloy then grew their lead in the second as they quickly pushed home a run behind a walk, stolen base, and RBI single.  It was here that CSI turned to Alexandra Frenza out of the bullpen, and the junior was able to escape the inning without further damage.  The Dolphins would leave two on base in the third, and Molloy would then extend their lead to five in the fourth.  It was in the bottom half of the inning that the Dolphins would get on the board for the first time with an RBI groundout by Aliveah Warner, but this was the last time they would score.  Molloy later added two insurance runs in the seventh as they would go on to beat the Dolphins, 7-1.

Stalker and Natalya Knoth accounted for the only two CSI hits in the game, and Frenza allowed two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of relief.

The Dolphins control their playoff fate and will have the opportunity to clinch their first ECC playoff berth next Saturday.  To reach the postseason, the Dolphins will have two possible paths.  First, they can clinch a postseason spot with just eight conference wins if they sweep D'Youville in their final doubleheader of the season.  Second, they can clinch simply by reaching nine wins on the year which would require a victory in three of their final four games.
