SOFTBALL FACES MUST-WIN SEASON FINALE ON SATURDAY FOLLOWING DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP BY MERCY

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team is now facing a must-win situation in their season finale after they were swept by Mercy University in today's ECC doubleheader.  In game one, the Dolphins let a 4-0 lead get away before a seventh-inning rally came up one run short in a 7-6 defeat.  In game two, the Mavericks jumped in front early and never looked back as they defeated the Dolphins, 8-4.  With the losses, the Dolphins are 18-20 on the year and 6-12 in conference play.  The wins improve the Mavericks to 20-18, and Mercy has clinched a playoff spot with an 10-6 conference record.

GAME 1
The Dolphins opened the scoring with a big first inning as they brought home four runs during their first turn at bat.  Following a one-out walk, a pair of bloop singles chased home the game's first run and left two Dolphins on base.  Hitting with two on and one out, Olivia Wanser sent a towering three-run homer over the left-center field wall to put the Dolphins ahead 4-0.  Trailing 4-0, Mercy would get on the board for the first time two innings later as pair of runs came home on two Mercy hits.  The Mavericks would later pull two within one with a run-scoring two-out hit in the fifth, and a second two-out hit would tie the game moments later.  The Mercy lead was short-lived as Wanser delivered a two-out RBI double of her own to put the Dolphins back in front 5-4.  However, Mercy put together a three spot in the seventh behind three hits and two CSI errors.  This set the stage for a seventh inning Dolphins rally which saw CSI load the bases.  Down to their final out, a walk forced home a run, but the Dolphins would ultimately strand the bases loaded to end the comeback bid one run short in a 7-6 defeat.

Aileen Balderas led the Dolphins with four hits in the game and Wanser drove in four runs on her two hits.  The Dolphins finished the game with eleven hits as a team, all coming against Mavericks starter Skylar Brandemarte.  Getting the start for CSI, Kennedie Ruth went 5.0 innings in a loss allowing seven runs on nine hits.  Marena Grenier then added two innings of scoreless relief out of the Dolphins bullpen.

GAME 2
The first runs of game two came during a five-run Mavericks rally in the second inning.  Six Mercy hits against Grenier prompted a CSI pitching change as Alexandra Frenza came on in relief early.  The Mercy rally would eventually end following a lengthy battle between Frenza and Talia Salanto that culminated with a strikeout.  Behind 5-0, the Dolphins scored twice in the second on a 2-RBI double by Anissa Acosta.  In the third, Mercy extended their lead back to five, but the Dolphins would get that run back in the fourth on a solo home run by Bridget Motley.  Mercy then added a pair in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead, and the Dolphins would settle for just one run after loading the bases in the bottom half of the inning.  This would be the final major scoring opportunity for the Dolphins as they went on to lose by a final score of 8-4.

Motley finished with three hits and was a triple shy of the cycle.  Acosta also had two hits and a team-leading 2 RBI.  In the circle Grenier took the loss after pitching for the second straight game.  Frenza then came on in relief to allow three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings.

The Dolphins still control their playoff fate and will have the opportunity to clinch their first ECC playoff berth on Saturday.  To reach the postseason, the Dolphins must win both of their games against D'Youville University at the CSI Softball Complex on Saturday.  The Saints will also be looking to clinch a playoff spot on the season's final day as they will need just one win to lock up a playoff spot.
