STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island softball team hosted its final non-conference doubleheader before entering East Coast Conference play, taking on Holy Family University Tuesday afternoon on Staten Island.
After holding leads in both contests, the Dolphins were unable to hold off late rallies as the Tigers secured 4-2 and 7-5 victories.
Game One: Holy Family 4, Dolphins 2
The Dolphins jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first three innings of game one. After being held scoreless in the opening frame, CSI responded in the second when Abbie Morris led off with a base hit and later scored on a Taryn Judson RBI double for a 1-0 advantage.
In the third, Julia Del Masto led off with a hit and moved to third on singles by Presley Borne and Jianna Lopez. With two outs, Bridget Motley drove in Del Masto to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Dolphins' defense held the Tigers scoreless for most of the contest, but Holy Family rallied in the seventh. With two outs, the Tigers tied the game at two before adding two more runs to take a 4-2 lead. CSI was unable to respond in the bottom half.
Morris went 2-3 at the plate, while Del Masto, Judson, and Kaylee Cary each went 1-3 with a walk. Marena Grenier made her seventh appearance of the season in the circle and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Game Two: Holy Family 7, CSI 5
Game two featured more offense, with the Dolphins again taking an early lead. Holy Family struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning, but CSI capitalized on a Tigers error to even the score at one.
The Dolphins added runs in both the second and third innings to build a 3-1 lead, highlighted by RBI at-bats from Emma O'Neill and Abbie Morris. However, the Tigers responded with a five-run fifth inning to take control, 6-3.
Trailing 7-3 in the seventh, CSI mounted a two-out rally. Madilyn Paul singled, followed by Aliveah Warner to put two on. Motley then drove in both runners to cut the deficit to 7-5, but the comeback fell short.
Motley led the Dolphins with a 3-3 performance and three RBI, while Paul went 2-3 with a walk and scored three runs. Kennedie Ruth started in the circle and struck out six in a complete-game effort.
The Dolphins (5-9) will open ECC play Friday with a doubleheader against Queens College in Flushing, NY, beginning at 2:00 PM.
