DOBBS FERRY, NY – The College of Staten Island softball team continued East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Mercy University in Dobbs Ferry.
The Dolphins showed early promise in game one behind a big swing from Taryn Judson, but were ultimately unable to keep pace as the Mavericks completed the sweep.
Game One: Mercy 9, CSI 3
Mercy struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2–0 lead. The Dolphins responded in the second, when Abbie Morris led off with a single and Bridget Motley followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position.
Taryn Judson capitalized, launching a three-run home run to center field to give CSI a 3–2 advantage. The long ball marked Judson's second home run of the season, tying her for the team lead.
However, that would be the Dolphins' only offense of the game. Mercy answered with seven unanswered runs to secure a 9–3 victory.
Judson finished 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Motley and Morris each recorded a hit and scored a run. Madilyn Paul drew two walks, and Kennedie Ruth struck out two over 5.0 innings in the circle.
Game Two: Mercy 8, CSI 0 (5 Innings)
The Dolphins were unable to generate offense in game two, as Mercy completed the sweep with an 8–0 win in five innings.
CSI had limited opportunities, putting runners on base in the third inning when Rose Joseph and Jianna Lopez reached, but the Mavericks worked out of the jam to preserve their lead. The Dolphins threatened again in the fourth, using a Mercy error and a hit-by-pitch to get runners aboard, but were turned away on a fielder's choice.
Joseph accounted for CSI's lone hit of the game, while Marena Grenier struck out three over 3.1 innings.
The Dolphins now sit at 9–13 overall and 4–4 in ECC play. They will return home on Saturday to host St. Thomas Aquinas for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
