STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's soccer team returned to action Wednesday afternoon, hosting Goldey-Beacom College at Dolphins Soccer Park. The Dolphins delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Lightning 4-1 behind a hat trick from Yair Roman, who recorded his best outing of the season.
The victory marked the first time in program history that the Dolphins defeated the Lightning.
Goldey-Beacom opened the contest with an early shot that missed its target before a foul near the top of the box gave the Dolphins a free-kick opportunity. Roman stepped up and sent the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for his first goal of the season, giving CSI a 1-0 lead. The Lightning quickly responded, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute to even the score at 1-1.
The Dolphins regained the lead when Emmanuel Kambouris scored off an assist from Claidi Nucja. Just over a minute later, Roman struck again, extending CSI's advantage to 3-1 heading into the remainder of the first half.
Entering the second half, the Dolphins maintained control of the contest while looking to preserve their two-goal advantage. After Feyisope Osifeso was fouled inside the box, Roman stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick. He converted the opportunity to complete his hat trick and secure the Dolphins' 4-1 victory.
Roman led the Dolphins with three goals in 76 minutes of action, while Kambouris contributed one goal and one assist. Carlos Romero Astacio recorded five saves to earn his second victory in goal this season.
With the win, the College of Staten Island men's soccer team improves to 2-3 overall. The Dolphins will open East Coast Conference (ECC) play this Saturday when they host D'Youville University at 2:30 PM.
