Pavel Buyanov has been named CSI’s Male Athlete of the Month for November 2007. The Russian-born freshman who stands at 6-2 is a part of the Dolphins swimming and diving team. With only four meets into his intercollegiate career, Buyanov has wasted no time making his mark on the team and in the record books.

The Dolphins have started their season 4-0 and had placed 9th in the ECAC Championships, a very impressive launch to the season. Buyanov took his first dive into the CSI record books with a 49.62 finish in the 100 Yard Freestyle as the Dolphins took their first match over Pace University. Buyanov was a part of the record breaking team also consisted of Nick Levintov, Nikolay Shevchenko and Mohamed Hikal. The foursome broke the CSI record in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:41.60 during their win against Mount St. Mary only to break the record a week later with a time of 1:31.69 against Baruch College. The group also broke another CSI record in the 400-yard Medley relay with a time of 3:35.18.

With his third win of the season in the 100-yard Breaststroke, his specialty, Buyanov qualified for the NCAA DIII National Championships that will send him to Ohio in mid-March. He finished with a time of 58.26. A week later he finished with a time of 59.04 to place first, his fourth gold of the season.

Buyanov’s most notable performance was at the ECAC Championships. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Buyanov finished first out of 49 swimmers, placing a time of 2:03.04, breaking a CSI record by almost 25 seconds while at the same time also setting a new ECAC record. Buyanov finished 13th overall in the competition, tallying 45 points. He was named Performer of the Meet by the ECAC.

Buyanov and teammate Nikolay Shevchenko were named ECAC Co-Players of the week as well as CUNYAC Co-Players of the Week for their outstanding performance in the ECAC Championship.
