The College of Staten Island women's tennis team fell to Kean University, 9-0, in a Monday afternoon match-up, just missing the rain that stormed out the men's soccer contest with St. Joseph's College (Patchogue) later in the evening. CSI women's tennis fell to 10-5 overall, while the men's soccer team stayed pat at 2-9-2.
Scheduled as a make-up from a previous rain-out, CSI was humbled by the Cougars, who swept all flights. Lisette LaForge, Lauren Petrucelli, Debra Dress, Jaelynn Lee, Miriam Penafiel, and Jessica Oquendo all won in both doubles and singles play. The most heavily competed match came at No. 1 Singles. LaForge took a decisive 6-1 win in the first set over CSI's
Gabriella Villarruel, but CSI's senior fought back for a gritty, 6-3, winner in the second set. Forced into a third set 10-point tiebreak, LaForge just narrowly got the better of Villarruel, winning, 10-7.
Meanwhile, north of New York later in the evening, CSI men's soccer saw it's game with the Eagles of St. Joseph's halted due to thunder and lightning. St. Joe's was up 7-0 in the 67th minute when play was forced to be stopped. A make-up of the match has not yet been decided on.
