The College of Staten Island women's tennis team upped their win streak to a pair of games, gliding past CUNYAC-rivals York College, 8-1, in a match played Friday afternoon in Jamaica, NY. The Dolphins improved their season mark to 4-2 and 2-0 in CUNY, while York dipped to 2-5, 2-3, respectively.
CSI opened up a 2-1 lead after doubles play, setting the table for what would be a sweep in singles. CSI won in both the first and second flights. In No. 1 Doubles the Dolphins' team of
Gabriella Villarruel and
Ilona Stoyko stayed unbeaten as a pair, winning 8-3, while the No. 2 pair of
Yelena Rasporskaya and
Qing Li, won by the same score. York peppered in their only win at No. 3, where the team of Tenzin Kunchok and Ana Ko defeated CSI's
Justine Kuna and
Tara Colao, also by an 8-3 count.
From there, however, the match belonged to CSI. Villarruel cruised at No. 1 Singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Kuna at No. 6 fared just as well, winning 6-1, 6-0. The rest of the matches were very well contested. Stoyko beat YC's Nicole Jones, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 to clinch victory and that was followed by Li's 6-1, 7-5 winner over York's Amba Chanoine at No. 3.
CSI added flights five and four for extra measure. At No. 5, Rasporskaya defeated Ko, 6-2, 7-6. Then in the most contested match of the afternoon,
Nancy Almazo defeated the Cardinals' Nina Olladikankwu 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 11-9.
CSI will be back on courts tomorrow, when they host CCNY in conference play at 12 Noon.
