The College of Staten Island women's tennis team won for the third straight while staying unbeaten in the CUNYAC ranks, turning back the City College of New York in conference play with an 8-1 mark in action yesterday at the CSI Tennis Center. CSI improved to 4-2 overall on the season and an impressive 3-0 in CUNYAC play to start the season.
CSI started with an a solid doubles faring, taking two out of the three flights. At No. 1, the team of
Gabriella Villarruel and
Ilona Stoyko powered past CCNY's Darya Vasedin and LaPortia Hackworth, 8-3. One flight down, CSI's
Yelena Rasporskaya and
Qing Li advanced to 3-1 on the year as a team, by winning their flight, 8-2. The most contested flight came at No. 3, where the Beavers won a marathon, 9-8 (9-7) match as Sherada Bogle and Naydine Johney took the win over CSI's
Justine Kuna and
Tara Colao.
From there, however, it was all Dolphins, as CSI won every singles flight, giving up a total of just 13 games within the 12 sets. Rasporskaya scored the heaviest victory, winning 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 Singles. Villarruel, Stoyko, Li and Kuna also won to add to their doubles farings, while
Nancy Almazo came in at No. 4 Singles to win hr flight, 6-1, 6-0.
CSI will get a little break before returning to action on Monday in a non-conference meeting with St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in a 4:00pm match at CSI.
