The College of Staten Island women's tennis team won for the sixth straight time, extending their conference mark to a perfect 5-0, with an 8-1 win over CUNYAC-rivals Lehman College in a match played earlier today in the Bronx, NY. With the win, CSI extends to 7-2 overall, while the Lightning fell to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
While CSI has been rolling, they did something against Lehman that they've only been able to do in one other CUNYAC match this season, which is sweep all three doubles flights, giving the Dolphins a commanding 3-0 advantage going into Singles. Doing the honors this afternoon was the CSI teams of
Gabriella Villarruel and
Ilona Stoyko at first doubles, followed by
Justine Kuna and
Yelena Rasporskaya in second position and
Qing Li and
Tara Colao at No. 3.
When play turned to singles, CSI was equally up to task, winning flights 1-5 to soar to the win, avenging last year's loss to Lehman in the CUNYAC Semifinals. Villarruel won at the top spot over LC's Ravnit Bhatia, 6-1, 6-3. CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Stoyko stayed hot with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Natalee Smith at No. 2. One flight down, Li powered over Dalia Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-1. Rasporskaya took her first set, 6-4, before her opponent retired, and Kuna coasted in the fifth position, 6-2, 6-1.
CSI returns to action tomorrow at 10am, when they host FDU-Florham in non-conference play at teh CSI Tennis Center.
