The College of Staten Island women's tennis team will go into postseason tournament play losers of three straight, falling Tuesday night on the road against Mount Saint Mary College in non-conference play, 7-2, in Newburgh, New York. CSI fell to 6-9 overall while the Blue Knights lifted their record to 9-1.
MSM did a host of damange in doubles, taking all three flights. When play switched to singles, play got a lot more competitive, but the Knights were able to secure four flights to cruise to the 7-2 final. Both CSI wins in singles were the result of extraordinarily hard work. In the top spot,
Ilona Stoyko powered over Jaimee Luniewski in a marathon match, 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-5). Meanwhile, down at No. 4 position, freshman
Jean Baak lost her first set to MSM's Jillian Torre, 6-2, but bounced back to win the next two sets, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-2), to win her set.
For the Knights, Jen Gregory, Emily Gregory, Annie Llewellyn and Alissa Niad, all scored both singles and doubles victories.
The Dolphins will next play as part of the CUNYAC Postseason Tournament. The team has earned the No. 4 seed by virtue of its 5-3 conference mark, and will host No. 5 CCNY (5-3), Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm at the CSI Tennis Center as part of quarterfinal play.
