MEDGAR EVERS HAND CSI THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS, 5-4

A three-game conference winning streak for the College of Staten Island men's soccer team has now been met with a three-game skid, as the Dolphins fell to Medgar Evers College, 5-4, in sudden death overtime at the CSI Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.  CSI is now 3-6-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while MEC improved to 2-12, 1-3, respectively.

In a game where MEC led in most of the stats, CSI led for most of the game.  Alfonso Castenda got CSI on the board just three and a half minutes in on a Dogan Altunsoy feeder, giving the Dolphins the early lead, but MEC had plans to be pesky all day.  Ten minutes later, at 13:50, the hero of the match, Zeakiel Daley scored his first of four goals, doing it the eay way, via a penalty shot after a CSI foul in the box.

With momentum, MEC added another at 27:48, when Mohamed Jalloh connected unassisted, this time on a free kick that got past CSI keeper Ahmed El-Ghareib, putting the Cougars up, 2-1.  CSI, however, caught fire, and scored two goals to end the frame.  At 30:31, CSI was now awarded a penalty shot, and junior Lirim Begai calmly sank his shot past MEC keeper Christopher Welsh, to equalize.  Then, with just 2:34 left in the frame, Kenneth Zaw found the twine with a thundering shot from the right of goal, giving CSI the lead.

CSI then assumed full control, when at 74:41, Casteneda scored for the second time on a long lobbing shot to give CSI a commanding 4-2 edge.  Almost in the blink of an eye, however, it evaporated.  Just 59 seconds after the goal, Daley connected again on James MAynard's pass from the left of goal, and just 50 seconds after that, another CSI foul in the box gave MEC a second penalty kick, and Daley banged it home again to knot the score 4-4.

The game stayed relatively even from there and then hit overtime.  MEC outshot the Dolphins 2-0 in the extra session, and the second one held up as Daley connected on a Jalloh corner kick, Medgar's one and only corner of the game, for the winner at 116:39.

MEC out-shot CSI, 22-12, but CSI had more shots on goal at 14-9.  CSI played with one man down from the 35th minute on, when Begai was sent off with his second yellow of the game.

CSI next plays non-conference St. Joseph's College - LI on the road on Monday at 7pm.
