Box Score 2 The College of Staten Island men's baseball team earned a split in a non-conference doubleheader tonight, battling the win, rain, and cold to take a 3-1 win in game one, and falling 7-4 in the nightcap. The split brings CSI to 10-8 overall this season while the Panthers lifted their mark to 9-6.
The Dolphins got a great performance on the hill from
Richard Anderson in game one, as the hurler tossed a complete game five-hitter, allowing just a single unearned run, fanning six and not walking any batters to keep the Panthers at bay. Meanwhile, Joey Falcone got CSI started in the second inning with a single off of Panthers starter Brian Angelone, and after
Mark Glennerster earned on base after getting plunked,
Sal Todaro walked to load the bases. Two batters later,
Dan Lynch belted a two-RBI single to right field getting the Dolphins a 2-0 lead, one that would hold up the rest of the way.
CSI squandered a run in the top of the fifth when Josh Spielberg would come home via a pair of outfield errors, but the Dolphins got the run back in their turn at the dish, when Lynch would also cross via an infield throwing error after earning an infield hit earlier in the inning.
Purchase out-hit CSI, 5-4, in the opener, while both teams left only four runners on base. Angelone took the loss for the visitors, tossing five strong innings, allowing three runs (two earned), fanning three and walking two.
The Panthers would get even in the nightcap, scoring a come-from-behind win. The Dolphins opened up a 3-0 lead over the first four innings, using single runs in the first, second and fourth before Purchase put up a three-spot in their fifth-inning turn. Austin Groves did a host of the damage via a two-RBI double, which chased CSI starter
Casey Mulligan. Freshman
Daniel Slevin, however, only lasted a third of an inning, yielding a walk and an infield single in-between as Purchase loaded the bags for reliever
James Mardikos. The senior got Colin Morris to ground out but an RBI was the result, tying the game at 3-3 as Groves came in to score.
CSI appeared to seize momentum back in their corner when they got their turn in the fifth. With Eric Cuadrado on the mound in relief of starter Charlie Salino, CSI punched a run across via a
Sal Todaro base hit, scoring Falcone, who started the rally with a two-out single up the middle.
The Dolphins lead was short-lived, however, as the Panthers exploded for four runs in the sixth inning. A Will Bernstein RBI-single got the rally started, chasing Mardikos.
Jeff Pontebbi was the next victim, yielding a two-RBI single (credited to Mardikos) to break the game open.
CSI went down in order, and put runners at second and third base with one out against closer Kevin McQuade in the bottom of the seventh, but CSI's
Mark Glennerster went down swinging while Todaro grounded out for the final out, preserving the save for McQuade.
The Dolphins are now 2-2 since ripping off an eight-game win skein. They next face Kean University on Tuesday at 3:30pm in a single game at the CSI Baseball Complex.
