In a scheduled doubleheader at Randall's Island, the College of Staten Island men's baseball team was able to secure one win over City College of New York, taking a 3-1 win in game one before a second game could be played due to the inclement weather. The win for the Dolphins moved the team to 15-12 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while the Beavers fell to 6-21, 3-4, respectively. Game two will take place on Monday at 12 Noon at the College of Staten Island. After that seven-inning contest, CSI will them play another nine-inning contest with CCNY in a game that won't count towards the CUNYAC standings.
Aiding the way for the Dolphins in the opening game was the masterful pitching performance of senior
Pat Gale. The ABCA/Rawlings All-American yielding only a single run on two hits, earning the complete-game win (his second of the season) while fanning 11 batters.
Ironically, however, it was the Beavers who drew first blood in the first inning. A Michael Smith RBI-groundout did the honors, scoring Andrew Romanella, who led the game off with a single, and was pushed over to third via a walk and sacrifice.
CSI did not wait long to exercise its comeback, as the Dolphins pushed across two runs in the second inning off of CCNY starter Andrew Mulvey. After a
Joe Cassano single, Joey Falcone laced a triple to right-center field scoring Cassano. Next up was
Mark Glennerster, who joined the hit parade by striking a single to center, scoring Falcone. One inning later, CSI added an insurance marker when Matt Morales' grounder scored
Henry Roman who was pushed over third after doubling in the inning.
From there, it was all about Gale, as the southpaw yielded only one hit after the third inning and just two baserunners total, earning the win. Cassano, Falcone, and
Dan Lynch each tallied two hits for the Dolphins, who registered 10 overall.
Moments before the start of Game Two, the rains hit hard, forcing the teams to postpone the second contest, which will be made up on Monday.
