The College of Staten Island women's tennis team went into Millpond Park short-handed, and never could recover, falling to City College of New York, 6-3, as part of CUNYAC competition on Saturday afternoon. The loss sends the Dolphins to 1-3 overall on the season and levels their conference mark to 1-1, while the Beavers advanced to 1-2, 1-1, respectively.
The Dolphins were immediately down 1-0, having to concede third doubles, when they got a big lift from their pair of doubles teams which took both flights. In the top flight, the duo of
Alena Vedeneeva and
Ilona Stoyko defeated Natalie DeSabato and Ayanna Reid, 8-5. The second duo saw a shorter match, as
Sophia Varriano and
Katie Masterson took out CCNY's Diana Yusim and Nataliya Machalba by an 8-2 count.
It was singles which saw the pendulum swing in the Beavers' favor, as CCNY ripped off five wins in six flights. After winning the sixth flight by default, the score was knotted up, and the Beavers scored victories and the first, second, fourth, and fifth flights to cruise to victory. CSI's lone win was Vedeneeva's, 6-1, 6-0, win over Yusim. Stoyko battled hard in the second spot, but ultimately fell to CCNY's Reid in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
CSI will try to bounce back when it travels to face St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Sunday afternoon in Patchogue.
