The College of Staten Island men's soccer team fell short in a 2-1 non-conference game to Maritime College this afternoon with only seconds left on the clock. With only 55 seconds remaining, the Privateers scored the go-ahead goal off of the foot of Nick LaRocca. The loss is the Dolphins' first of the season bringing their record to 0-1-1 while the Privateers extended to 4-1.
The Dolphins played a good first half defensively as Ahmed El-Ghareib tallied four quick saves. Although the Dolphins only managed three shots in the first half, one went in through the upper right side as the Dolphins took the lead 1-0. The goal was scored by Aziz Kabulniyazov who subbed in two minutes beforehand; his first career goal.
The second half saw a turn for the worse as the Dolphins seemed to have lost their steam towards the end. At the 73:45 mark of play, Alfred Yeboah was called for a hand ball foul in the Dolphin box that led to a penalty shot for Oliver Garcia-Ortiz that he sunk in the upper right side corner of the net. With the game tied 1-1 the Dolphins looked sluggish. The Privateers were on the attack shooting out the Dolphins, 5-0, in the final five minutes. The go-ahead goal was scored by LaRocca with just under one minute remaining. The Dolphins didn't manage a shot after the Privateers went ahead.
The Dolphins next game will be on the road against FDU-Florham on Saturday 10, 2011 at 1:00 PM.
