Box Score The College of Staten Island won for the second time in overtime this season, scoring a 3-2 winner over Lehman College in a CUNYAC contest played at South Field in the Bronx, New York on Saturday. CSI lifted its mark to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while the Lightning fell to 3-12-1 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The overtime tally was struck by CUNYAC's leading scorer
Nedgy Nazon, his 16th of the season, with 55 seconds remaining in the first half of overtime.
To win the game, CSI needed to overcome a 2-0 hole that they fell into to start the game. Oumar Niang did the honors for the home squad just 2:33 into the game, receiving a feed from Aleh Kazak and blasting a strike past CSI keeper
Ahmed El-Ghareib to make it a 1-0 lead. Seemingly reeling from that mark, CSI let their guard down just under four minutes later when Niang scored again, this time racing in all alone on El-Ghareib after CSI thought Niang was offside's. Just 6:31 into the contest, CSI was down 2-0.
From there, the exercise was about trying the get even, and the Dolphins got half way there in the 17th minute. The goal was tallied by
Alfonso Castaneda on a long-range free kick from nearly 40 yards out, a rather soft goal allowed to cross the plane by Lehman keeper Maurice Whyte. CSI outshot Lehman, 8-3 (3-2 on goal) in the first stanza, but the Lightning had a 2-1 halftime edge.
Feverishly working for an equalizer, CSI got it just 10 minutes into the frame in dubious fashion. This time, CSI worked its way into a corner kick. Castaneda did the honors, and before the ball could come down, Whyte tried to punch the ball out of the goal box but instead the ball landed into his own net for what would be scored an own goal. At 55:02, the game was then even at 2-2. Lehman ended up out-shooting CSI, 9-7 (6-5 on goal) in the second frame but it didn't matter, as El-Ghareib made all six saves, forcing overtime.
CSI and Lehman both got off a single shot in the overtime, but both were wide of goal before the game-winner was scored. Nazon scored the game-winner unassisted, juggling the ball on his own foot and then beating Whyte for the strike with 55 ticks remaining.
The Dolphins now have only one CUNYAC game remaining, against Brooklyn College on Wednesday at the CSI Soccer Complex. As it stands now, CSI has clinched at least fifth place in the CUNYAC standings. The first four teams in the standings are given a first-round CUNYAC Quarterfinal home contest. CSI can move up to fourth in the standings with a win over Brooklyn and losses by CCNY in their remaining two games (over Baruch and Medgar Evers).
